iPhone 3G apps crash on startup and cause iPhone to restart

I have found that when starting up some apps on my new iPhone (important: doesn't matter which apps) that they fail to start up and crash back to the iPhone 'desktop'. When this happens, try as I might, they almost ALL seem to do this, until finally the iPhone takes it upon itself to restart (which takes longer than a normal restart. However, after the restart, the apps work again! This sometimes happens after the iPhone has been 'asleep' for a while, but not always. It's as if just opening new apps is too much for it, or that other processes going on in the iPhone are crashing with the apps.
Anybody else having this?
(I have other issues with this new phone here in the UK - see my other posts).

I'll second that. Although I think it is unrelated to syncing. I'm not going to let my iPhone near itunes for a couple of days. See what happens. I currently have a load of apps not working. Not sure if they where working after the last sync, a day ago. Will try and kick the apps back to life by deleting and downloading AIM then let you guys know what happens. I have also notice the the phone locks up, approximately once a day. They only way to bring it back appears to be random button presses

I think the following steps if taken care of will not cause this problem again.

I am using a Windows XP PC
Re-install itunes
1. Uninstalled all apple products (itunes, quicktimes etc..)
2. Reinstalled the latest version of itunes from apple.

Follow the below Sync Process whenever syncing
1. Performed the sync.
2. After sync complete, eject iphone through itunes.
3. Do not unplug the sync cable yet from the pc or iphone.
4. See your iphone screen, you will see on the top left a round animated circle shown always when something is being processed.
5. Wait for the processing icon (the animated circle) to disappear and then disconnect the cables.

Everytime I sync I amke sure that after the eject the processing circle disappears on the iphone before I disconnect the cable and my apps remain in working condition.

I have the same problem, and the following observations:
1) You can fix it, but it comes back.
2) Rebooting doesn't fix it, but deleting on reloading "at least" one app does. Then they all start to work.
3) If you crash a bunch of apps intentionally (by starting them up one after another (I thought I would give apple some good log data so I crashed about a dozen)) the phone does crash and reboots slow.
4) If you crash a bunch of apps but don't crash the phone and they sync, you sometimes get a "sync" crash (the phone stops syncing).

5) Everything else listed above I have experienced as stated above.

6) Here is one new observation and a question for the group:
I sync Contacts, Mail and Calender on a mac, but Music and Video on a PC. I have found that the crashes happen after syncing on the PC. Does everyone on this list sync on a PC? Or sync "dual" as I am doing?

Best

1) Agreed
2) A definite CONFIRMED on this. I deleted an app via the app store, reinstalled it, and things started working.

6) I only sync via a PC.

One addition: most of the time, NO third-party apps work - once one starts crashing, they all do. Occasionally one or two will still work, but the rest won't. And even when the third party apps aren't working, the Apple apps (safari, iPod, Weather) still work.

It does seem to be sync related, but it just could be that I've been installing and deleting a lot of apps until this week, when it started occurring (it seemed to start around the time I sync'd it)

1) and 2) Yes definitely.

6) Calendar and Contacts via mobile me. Apps via my macbook, music via my mini. I haven't sync'd, (physical connection), since my last post, close to a couple of days now and still being able to access apps. I want to wait until the weekend, maybe after as I am busy. The first course of action is to sync to the mini and see what happens to the apps on the phone. Then I will try with Macbook.

I'll post what happens next!

I too am having the problem. Once I sync, the apps will no longer start. I get errors during sync about not being able to transfer the apps that are already on my phone to the phone because they are not allowed. This is stupid since I downloaded them on the phone, itunes transferred them into itself from the phone while syncing then gave me the error. After that, all apps crash upon starting.

I can delete them and redownload but it just happens again. The error in itunes does not happen always but it seems that the crashing apps always happens after syncing with these errors.

This is quite a pain and I hope Apple is paying attention...

I believe I have a solution for those still suffering with this problem.
1. Sync your iPhone making sure apps are transferred.
2. Remove your apps from your phone.
3. Fire up iTunes, go to Store, Authorize Computer, fill in your iTunes info.
4. Sync your iPhone with this iTunes.

It should download your apps back onto your phone. You will need to reconfig all your apps but hopefully this will prevent the crashing in the future. It was cased by problems with DRM and an unauthenticated computer.

Good Luck,
Eric

This is the 4th time I have to restore my iphone now due to crashing apps. I called apple and they said it was due to the 3rd party programs..Now if apple is the ones deciding on whats released and whats not released shouldn't they be accountable for assuring the program will not crash my iphone? I do not have an extra hour everyday to sit here reloading everything and re-adding all my settings....AGAIN!! This better get fixed asap.
