I bought this car charger and it worked for months, and when I got back from a road trip I got the latest iPhone OS update and now the phone tells me that "Charging is not supported with this accessory."
Does your iPhone charge without any problems when connected to your computer or to the wall charger?
Check the dock connector port closely on your iPhone for any dirt, lint, or foreign material - and it doesn't take much.
If the dock connector port on your iPhone is clear and your iPhone charges without any problems with connected to your computer and/or to the wall charger, there is something wrong with your car charger.
It seems obvious that iOS4 included a routine to eliminate non apple approved devices from working. In addition to the above examples, a TV I bought that had a iPhone dock for music and video playback worked perfectly until OS4, after iOS4 the phone would report "unsupported device" and simply not work with the TV anymore.
I am not so sure it is the software or firmware 4.0 or 4.0.1, as my car charger I got at ATT has worked well after the ios4 install, and the 4.0.1 install. I only experienced failure the past two days in the car using the same charger. However I updated software when it came out, so weeks ago and it worked.
I randomly have gotten the same messages you speak of, but not always over the last two days. However it always fails to initiate on the phone that it is plugged in.
I think the cords fail. This will be my third cord from ATT. free exchange so I do not worry, but it is a bother. Now if I get a new cord today and it does not work, then it could be software.
Not everytime but about 30-40% of the time I get that annoying message, I pull out the charger from the cigarette lighter and put it back in (sometimes 3 or 4 times) and it will then work....
The stupid this is, I bought it from the same place I got the phone....seems thats enough certification isnt it !?!?
Did you upgrade to iOS4? Did the problems start happening after the upgrade? If you look at your charger's rating label, does it say "5V 1A" or "5V 500mA"? If it's the latter, that would probably explain what's happening to a lot of people who upgraded to iOS4. All iPhones charge at 1A, but they're also allowed to charge at 500mA, which is the current that PC USB ports can output. I think with iOS4, Apple messed something up which is causing finicky behavior with 500mA chargers. By the way, up until recently, most docking speakers out in the market have been 500mA.
Same problem here. It is obnoxious. My Griffen Car charger does not work any more, nor does my kitchen dock. Quite obnoxious. My iPods still charge on my car and my dock, but my iPhone with IOS4.0.1 does not. Also interesting side note my girlfriends iPhone 3G with IOS3 charges without any issues.
I thought it was my phone and I had it replaced under Applecare. The problem still persists. I will try 4.0.2 tomorrow and see if that helps.
Apple please get fixing on this, I do not want to have to change all of my peripheral devices every time you update your OS.
I have had the same problem. My 3GS charges OK from the wall charger, and my laptop, but when I try to use my car charger or my older PC it says that charging is not supported.
I've swapped the cables about to establish if there was a failure in the cable itself, but it's not.
There is a USB charger for the car which uses the original cable which still works, but half of my charging methods are no longer working.
Please Apple, sort this out. The phone needs to be charged constantly but now I'm finding that I'm running flat before I can get home!!!
I've got the same issue. All worked fine unti i updated to iOS 4.* (iPhone 3GS).. My son's iPhone (iOS 3.*) stil works fine with the same car I think it's a firmware issue.
My wife's 3GS all of a sudden will not charge with an Apple USB charger attached to a powered USB hub. All was fine until yesterday, when I upgraded to 4.1. It will charge on my other charge outlets, all Apple USB's. My 4G and my daughter's 3G works fine, both running 4.1 so it looks like a 3GS issue to me. Maybe its the powered hub, but its interesting that my other iPhones charge with no problem.
I have the same issue. After upgrading my 3GS to 4.0, my car charger, which previously worked normally, stopped charging. I filed a support ticket and was told that the auto manufacturer had designed a new "compatible" cable. I checked with them, they in fact had... which happened to be the one that came with my car. To determine whether or not this was true, the dealer even let me test out two brand new cables with the phone, with the same failing result: no charging due to the "charging not supported" error.
At this point, there is no other answer... 4.0 did this. Period.
