Lost music after stopping Apple Music subscription. Music that I owned before subscription.

I have an iPhoneXR. I tried a free 3 month Apple Music subscription but cancelled after just a few weeks because I hated it. After I cancelled it, some of my playlists were completely empty and they were filled with songs that I had bought long before I tried Apple Music. I’m unable to download albums that I bought long before Apple Music. I can’t download them even when attached to my Mac or through iTunes. Apple Music seems to have completely screwed up my music! What’s going on?

I had this happen with music that I ripped from my own CD collection. Nothing is hidden. The Artist folders are completely gone from the file system. I won't be trying Apple Music again. Now I have to re-rip gigs of songs. Also, cover art on my music was changed by Apple Music. Pretty aggravating for those of us who prefer to own our music instead of renting it.
