Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Same here.

No Maps from iOS 13 Workouts showing at all, on new iOS 14 workouts, if I'm lucky I'm getting a map with a single pin on the starting point, but no route information. Tried with Outdoor Walk and Cycle.

GPS is working though since thats the only way to measure an Outdoor Cycle.

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

Happy to report that restoring my iPhone and doing a fresh install of iOS 14 from my Mac has fixed the problems.

All missing workouts are back, route maps are back and missing stand data back.

If anyone’s interested I basically followed the same steps that some others have (similar to here: https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/)

  1. Backed up iPhone to iCloud (usual backup overnight whilst charging)
  2. Turn off Find My iPhone
  3. Connect iPhone to Mac and Option click Restore iPhone
  4. Select the iOS 14 IPSW file on Mac hard drive and let it do it’s thing (it didn’t take long)
  5. Once it’s installed the fresh iOS 14, your iPhone will display the usual “Hello” set up screen. Go through the steps and when prompted select the newest iCloud back up (which will take plenty of time depending on how much cr...stuff you have on your iPhone.

Note I didn’t unpair my Watch, didn’t need to and it paired up automatically once my iPhone was restored.

Hopefully this helps someone else.

I did unpair and re-pair, erase content on watch, fresh os14 install on phone none worked. The one thing that worked to get my workout maps to show up on fitness app was erase all content and settings. This might still not work for some still though.

  1. Unpair watch
  2. make an icloud backup
  3. erase all content and settings on your phone
  4. restore phone from icloud backup
  5. pair watch

Previous workout routes still does not show for me. I was not sure this worked when i went on my morning run so i still used strava app for my run. But i did my walking cooldown thru the AW fitness app. Did not even know it worked until i synced my strava run and tried the import my walk from AW to strava which was not working at all since upgrading to IOS 14 and to my surprise it was able to import and the map route showed up on strava! Hope this works for some of you.

I did the whole process and situation is the same:

  • no maps for the routes previous to IOS-14 upgrade
  • outdoor walking workouts maps after IOS-14 to this morning show just the starting point
  • 2 more hours wasted reinstalling everything today, plus another reinstallation a few days ago, plus more time trying to identify what's happening
  • RunKeeper route maps (before and after IOS14/AW7) continue working without issues
  • Bye bye Activities/Workout/Fitness apps, 100% back to a trustable app

Oct 1, 2020 11:59 AM in response to WSREP223

  • Yes, after the whole unpair-backup-erase-restore-pair none of the pre-IOS14 maps were shown at all, the maps with routes for the workouts between installation of IOS-14 and installation of AW-7 (days later) were shown OK, and for the ones after installation of AW-7 up to this morning , just the map and the green dot (starting point).
  • 40-45 minutes later I sat that the routes for pre-IOS14 were there (great!)
  • 4-5 hours later I went for an specific map (Sep 8th) and now it was just a map with a green dot.... then I checked the rest and all of them are maps with a green dot...

Something is really wrong with the cache of these maps in the app, but the bright side is that the maps seem to be there but very well hidden...

Same here about VO2 Max, however my heart rate is recorded as expected. I read in another thread here that someone got VO2 Max back by following this procedure:

  1. Manually add a VO2 Max data point in Apple Health
  2. Reset fitness calibration on the Watch
  3. Recalibrate the watch with a 20-minute outdoor walk
  4. Take one or two 20-minute outdoor walks or runs; apparently the first one after calibration is only used internally for further calibration of VO2 Max or something like that.

I’m currently between steps 3 and 4 — not going out in the middle of the night in an area infested with wild boars. :-) But will report tomorrow, weather permitting.

Sure, but that doesn't mean the issue is fully fixed. There is a lack of detail on what it actually fixes - e.g:

  1. will it restore maps not recorded since the iOS 14 upgrade?
  2. will it also restore maps from workouts prior to iOS1 14 that disappeared?
  3. or will it only make maps work for new workouts and not fix old data?

News will trickle in as users try it out. As mentioned, I won't be trying it out. Having done the nuclear option to get maps working, I don't want to risk damaging my data again due to another cock-up from Apple.

I guess you are a learner on how to google. Let me help you...taken direct from 14.2 release notes....

Got it now??? And how do I know it is a minuscule number of users? Well, apart from this discussion board I haven’t seen too much about it anywhere else...so likely not many suffering right?!

This is an odd bug and I suspect has something to do with the way the Fitness app backs up to iCloud.

On 16th Sep I upgraded my iPhone XR to iOS 14 and watch Series 5 to watchOS 7. The next day 17th Sep I did a 3.71km walk which recorded the map route perfectly.

However the next day 18th Sep I started getting the gaps in Stand data and the route map of the walk was gone. Now all recorded outdoor walks/runs/ride have either no map or map showing start point only. Very odd.

Also at this point, I can still see the map in the Activity app on my old iPhone 7 running iOS 13.6.1

Sep 20, 2020 7:23 AM in response to DanielJeffery

This is what I am seeing, gaps in stand showing in fitness app, steps and miles moved also missing data.

did a 2 hour just under 8mile walk this morning and watch shows this, but health says I did 5.5 miles, exercise shows as 2 hours, but exercise minutes shows as just over an hour. Looks like it just stops collecting the data properly.

my stand minutes shows 60 minutes of standing for one hour this morning, but fitness shows no stand at all for that hour.

Took me 17 hours to get 12 stand hours showing yesterday.

Sep 21, 2020 11:54 AM in response to PabloMJ

Well, this certainly is interesting, but at least it explains why a few workouts never synced from the watch. Note how the numbers add up, but the graphs have hours-long gaps.

iPhone 11 with iOS 14.0, Apple Watch 4 with watchOS 7.0. Never used beta versions. No wonder the Health app burns through a lot of battery, there's probably some pretty serious bug somewhere.

I unpaired and re-paired the watch from the backup last night and it apparently made things even worse. No idea if the the full GPS track was recorded after the Watch restore. The only outdoor workout I was able to do before it started raining was during one of those unsynched moments, so it never made it to the watch.

Here's to hoping that either 7.0.1 or 14.0.1 come out soon with a fix. Right now the whole things feels *very* unstable.

Sep 23, 2020 12:08 PM in response to Oliver_Braun

I'm so happy that I want to shout it out to the whole world.

IT WORKS, WORKS, WORKS

I restored the iPhone with a new installation and then I synchronized the Apple Watch again without performing any type of cancellation.

I am attaching the screenshots of both Fitness and RunGap.

Now everything works correctly.

I think that when upgrading from IOS 13 to IOS 14, something must have gone wrong so I think you lose the information.

In the “Fitness” screen, you see that space because I made the ride with the car.

Friday I'm going to do some training and try to monitor what is happening well

Thank you all
