Text to Speak won't update voices after changing it in accessibility

Anyone figure out a solution to this previously posted question about text to speech voices not changing after updating accessibility options?

I followed all the steps posted here.

I restarted after updating the accessibility options.

No luck. When I select the "start speaking" option in any app - the voice = the system installed original voice.

Seems this issue originally posted in 2019 - is an ongoing issue.

Mac mini, macOS 12.3

You're welcome. The only difference I see is most all of my voices are enabled.

You can try booting into Safe Mode then restart normally.

Thanks! I tried the "Speak Selection" in multiple applications - the same system "Alex" voice (the voice I want to change) continues to be the "voice."

I unselected "Alex" in the Accessibility options.

Selected "Speak Selection in the Accessibility options (image: 2)

Apps still use Alex.

Thanks for the notes / suggestions. My goal to REMOVE ALEX as the "default" system voice - a mystery - continues.

LOL - as I noted in my initial post / query - I DO NOT WANT Alex as any voice - that's why I DISABLED it. I want the voice I selected in the image captured above as the default voice.
