iPhone 15 Pro Stops Recording Video Around 30 minutes

When I am recording a video, my iPhone 15 pro will randomly stop recording. It seems to stop around the 30 minute mark. I don’t know if it shows a message because I record art demonstrations so the phone is up above my head. I have plenty of available storage, I have turned off ProRes, and it does not get hot.

my iPhone 15 Pro does the same, but at random intervals. Sometimes it’s 3 minutes, sometimes it cuts out at 15 mins.

I have plenty of storage space and nearly no additional apps installed.

This is extremely annoying for such a product, and none of the steps above helped .

Very frustrating. I’m a professional speaker and from time to time do smaller workshops and I like the iPhone footage over my new Sony and this new phone is so random. 90 min workshop and I have clips of 6 min, 9 min and 11 min. I know this is an issue so I check periodically. Insane. Apple needs to fix this. I lost an hour of awesome footage that I can monetize.

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

  1. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  2. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  3. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

Yes, my people. This happened to me when I first purchased my iPhone 15 Pro Max 256 GB in October. Fully random, duration of the recording was also random. Tried restarts, fresh installs and everything it would always come back. Finally was able to get a new replacement and it was working perfectly. That is until last night, recording a volleyball game 3 mins in it stopped. Very very sad it's happening again. I record in 1080p 60fps with a Magsafe case on too. I'll try restarting and going aeroplane mode for tonight's game.

I tried this but it disables the ability to record 4k 60fps, which is all I have tested so far.

Are you saying this was happening to you on even lower formats? Like 4k 30, 1080 30, etc???

That honestly gives me a little hope that this is a software fixable issue and not a hardware issue.

Though the fact the 15 has been out for 5 months and Apple has not even acknowledged the problem gives me very little faith in Apple’s willingness to fix the problem.

Or, the problem is only present in very few phones and we all need to just exchange our duds?

Hi all!

I am recoding EVERY DAY using ONLY iPhones. I had the same problem and here's how I solved it: I removed the case and I positioned the phone just like you see in the pictures. Basically, leave the buttons and the antenna band (I guess that's what it is) uncovered, untouched. Since I did this, the iPhones are not stopping recording anymore and I do record sometimes 80 minutes uninterrupted. I hope this helps!

Ok so I have an update…but you guys aren’t going to like it. I went to the Apple Store on my return date and told them about the problem and told them I’d like to try a new iPhone 15.

They ran all the diagnostics and the hardware seemed fine, so they agreed to swap the phone out only once.

So I tested this new phone 3 times so far at 4k 60. The first two times it lasted an hour before I shut it off myself. The 3rd time it lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes before I shut it off myself. This last test was also on maximum brightness for a real stress test.

So ya not sure what to think. I’m glad the issue seems to be gone but I’m still afraid it may rear its ugly head again.

Also I did all 3 tests with my phone naked.

When I had my previous 15 I did all the tests with my cheap spigen $12 case. I am now wondering if the case was causing some sort of problem? I am kind of afraid to test it with the case on lol I don’t want to mess it up I kind of just want to get a different case.

I will do two more tests and if they both last over an hour I will consider the phone to be fine.

My first 15 pro max failed at 14 minutes the first time I recorded 4k60. Then 12 minutes the second time. Then it made it an hour the 3rd time. Then 35 minutes the next time.

So this phone is clearly an improvement, but ya I wish I could get the old phone back so I could test it without a case.

Update to my previous message: After tens of phone calls and hundreds of messages with Apple support and one useless repair store visit later, Apple finally is sending me a new phone. Let’s hope it’s not worse than the previous one.

I also met a girl at an event yesterday that said her phone has been doing the same thing ever since she bought it but thought her storage is low. The issue is real and many people are having it, but only a small percentage is reporting and complaining about it 🫠

It's now been three months and I'm no further forward. I've captured video footage of the fault occuring and sent it to the retailer, who have been totally dismissive of it unless Apple themselves look at the footage. Sent the phone to the retailer twice now for them to fix, first time they returned as no fault found and the second time they did not even bother test it (confirmed by their own agent in a call which I have a recording of!) just saw it was from me and sent it back immediately with a "we told you there's nothing wrong with it" type letter. They're now telling me to contact Apple directly... I've performed every possible trouble shooting step as guided by Apple and it's not fixing it.
