iPad 2 headphone jack not working with some earphones

Today I plugged my Ultimate Ears earphones into the headphone jack of my new iPad 2, and I only got sound on the left channel. With some wiggling I sometimes get a blip of sound on the right channel as well. I tried 2 other earphones, and 1 of them gave me the same result, the other gave me stereo by default, but drops the right channel when wiggling the plug a little. All three earphones work just fine on my iPhone 4.

I know there's been talk of a new pogo-stick design for the headphone jack on the iPad 2. So I'm wondering, is this a "feature", or is there something wrong with the headphone jack of this iPad?

Thx!

THANK YOU BRANDON! Apple replaced my iPad twice for this. The tech guy said how "random" it was that it happened on two iPads. I'm thinking they should be reading their own support pages.

They tested the 3rd one at Apple before I left with it and both earphones worked fine. Once I got home with it I reset it with my iCloud backup. After that is when the sound issue happened again.

Your advice did the trick. The sound works in both sides once again!

Just wonder what setting it is that causes it to avoid it in the future...

I have had a headphone jack problem with my iPad since last July (new in April 2011). Sometimes it works fine, sometimes I will hear only one channel, ie background music but no voice, vice versa, etc. If I jiggle the jack it gets distorted and may or may not help or make it worse

Tried and failed by:

*resetting to original factory settings

*Varied uses of different apps, videos, iTunes store purchases, imported CDs,etc

*Cleaning jack and inspecting for problems with jack

*Three different brands of headsets: skullcandy (with or without mic), apple headset, Sony

*Apple Store genius bar: found no problem with the jack itself and could not replicate the problem entirely although they said one pair of headsets in the back did seem to have the same kind of result. Said they had never heard of anyone having sound issues like this and that the were guessing there was a miscommunication between my Skullcandy headset's mic/remote switch and my iPad and it wasn't picking up the channels correctly so only use a headset without a mic/ remote switch. Well two different headsets later and I am still frustrated by this constant problem. Try watching a movie on Netflix when u have to keep constantly wiggling the jack to get the sound correct. Even when u are listening to the music and it sounds fine, once u move the headset at all the sounds goes in and out or changes volume. I have pretty much stopped using the iPad for anything that needs sound thru the headphones.

I am frustrated that my local Apple store keeps telling me they cant figure out whats wrong, but I can not solve it with new headsets, resetting, etc. Any advice?

Thanks.

Thankyou so much Brandon! I had the same issue with my iPhone 4S and apple replaced it twice saying how weird it was that it didn't work, I tried it in the shop before I got home yesterday and it worked fine then after restoring it on iTunes only one earphone worked again! Everyone else on here has discussed hardware but I knew it couldn't be because Apple replaced my earphones too, I just resetted settings and it works! Thankyou!!!

I discovered a setting that had the sound turned all the way to the right earphone. Moving it to the center position solved the issue for me. I had been having the same trouble and replaced my iPad twice and each time i restored from iCloud the problem returned.

Solution for me was going to:

Settings

General

Accessibility

Hearing

L & R level to the center position.

I hope this helps you.

I was just having same problem with my iPad. First, I though it was the cable I use to connect the iPad to my Apple iPod lock but when the same cable worked for my iPod, I knew it couldn't be that. I tried Brandon's suggestion and that didn't work. However, in the process, I was still hearing the clicks the iPad makes when you adjust the settings. I was wearing my headphones at the time. It occurred to me it might've been one of my apps. I have several apps that play music and on one of them, the volume was all the way down. I turned up and that did the trick. So that can be another thing to try before making numerous trips to the Genius Bar.
