compressed files are ok for Apple chipset DAC and amp but RIP CD's to AppleLossless (ALAC) now they are not that big... 20 MB for each 3min song... and around 900kb/sec average... very few folks have storage that precludes this file size. 350 songs on iPod shuffle 8GB... and iPad over 1000 songs Lossless... it is the HD video that kills...watch and delete... and stream movies... the MUSIC you listen to many times over.. not vids..
CD's ripped to ALAC sound so "muy bueno" with good cans and DAC/op-amp chipset. i like GRADO SR225i
for home or for portable the Ultimate Ears UE700 duel driver IEM for $150 can not be beat. And iPod line out to BitHead line in is almost as good as Digital USB on MAC or iPad...
