Wow, this is kind of uncool. I just bought a mac mini quad last week, almost a grand. I walked right past all the windows boxes that sold for about half as much, and dropped 960.00 bucks on a new box. Excitedley I got home and was so happy, because my g5 died just over a year ago, (it had been limping along for a very long time) and now I could move back in to the wonderful world of mac! Yeah! Oh wait, my copy of photoshop doesn't work any more? OK OK I can get a new one, just a couple hundred more bucks, mabey in a month or two. OH NO THIS MEANS Illustrator, Civ 3, Acrobat, and all of my other Power PC aps are dead also! I have read that FCP studio 3 will run on this box (that was why I bought it) fortunatly I have yet to find my install discs so I do not know, yet. So after scouring this city to find a new remote for my new box ( it was impossible, so I talked mom out of hers) I get home and and thinking hey it will be a good night of movie watching. wrong again kimosabe. Now I guess I can live with spending more on replacement software than I did on the box, in a very begrudgingly way. But the end of front row is the one that concerns me, because it seems that this is part of a corporate shift to cloud computing. I hate cloud computing. Now do not get me wrong, it is phenomenal for enterprise computing ( a huge market for apple, remember apple servers?) but not for me. It seems to me that if the only device I had was a tablet of some sort, think Ipad, then cloud computing would be awesome. However I dropped the extra bucks on something with a hard drive because I will use a hard drive, therefore the cloud option was, is, and shall not be the path of choice for me. Also what happened to support for Apple tv first gen? It has a hard drive that I actually use, it was really nice to just fire up the stereo, select the Apple tv hit the genius button and have some tunes while I washed the dishes, worked on a household project or just plain vegged. Now I have to fire up the box and do streaming useing my computer as a media server (without front row mind you) whaaaaaaa? So now I guess my best option is to pick up an old box, which I am realizing this as I type, not only to save about $1500.00 to $1900.00 in software costs, but to reload my Apple TV? Hmmmm I saw a couple of really nice mac book pros on ebay for about $150.00 to $250.00 bucks. GREAT. But as a side note I loaded the remote app on my Iphone, and it works great.
