Mobile Device Management Queries

Apple provides some limited documentation on building a MDM server, at http://www.apple.com/ipad/business/resources/, but no mention of how to perform queries, remote lock/wipe, etc... just how to deploy configuration files.

Are there any other resources that provide a more in-depth framework for building the complete server functionality? We want to consider developing this solution ourselves, rather than partnering with one of the third-party providers referenced by Apple.

Most of the MDM type funtionality that you would need is present in Lion Server. With profile manager you can easily manage iOS devices as well as Macs running 10.7. You can download Lion server from the App store for about $50.00.

I saw that with profile manager (an apple implantation of its mobiledevice management apis) allow you to enroll and manage iOS devices. I want toknow if this OS with profile manager MDM can work for managing 20 ipads withMAC MINI. What hardware do you recommend to buy? MAC MINI or MAC PRO? I thinkmac pro will be better but I need to reduce costs so I choose MAC MINI but I wantto know if it will work fine to manage our 20/22 ipads.

The mini will work fine... You really don't need horsepower to do this, and a Mac Pro would be overkill. Managing iPads isn't a resouce hog.
