iPhone 4 low earpiece volume after ios 5 upgrade

Hi all.

I have upgraded to ios 5 and biggest gripe i have withit that now my iphone 4 earpiece volume is now lower in volume but further more the quality of sound is worse... Sounds like a low end earpiece speaker the voice that comes through is weak and with lack of natural bass basically nothing like it was on 4.3.1 i had before.

Anyonr noticed deteriorated quality after the upgrade?

Regards S.

^ Hi, I also have an issue with low volume level via the headphones. After upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS 5, I found the volume thru the headphones to be about two steps lower than before. The sound quality was perfect though...

I have not tried a restore yet, but meanwhile came across a fix: With the music playing, I launched the Voice Memos App. This faded out the music. Then without actually recording anything, I went back to the Music App and restarted the music. This restored the volume to its normal level, same as it was in iOS 4.2.3. Maybe you could try the same and see if it works for you...

If anyone else is having volume issues after upg to iOS 5; or has found a solution, please post here... Thanks!

I, like everyone else here had the same volume problem. Just like a post or two above, clean the screen over the earpiece! After I saw that I grabbed an old jewelers loupe and was astonished just how crudy it was!

I used a toothbrush first, with not much luck. I eventually used a needle and very carefully scratched and picked at the screen. Finally I used a couple of Q-tips saturated with Windex. Not so much to get the liquid in the earpiece, but enough to wet it and scrub witht he cotton portion.

It's now clean as it was when it was new, and the volume is back where it should be!

I never thought much about it, but I work construction and I figure between the sweat, oils, dust etc... the very fine meshed screen never had a chance!!

Hope this helps!

Yes! I actually carefully pried off the mesh covers of the earphone speaker and went at both sides of the mesh with q-tips and rubbing alcohol. I dried them off and reassembled. I probably got a 50% boost with music if not more. I can't wait to try it later on a phone call.

Be careful if you do this. There's a fine wire inside that's attached to a piece that will want to come off with the mesh. The mesh is slightly flexible so you can pry out the piece the wire is attached to. The rubber padding bumper can tear too if your not careful. Also remember that if your sharp little prying tool slips its probably going into your hand. Be careful!

I downloaded the iOS 5.1.1 update as well and now during calls I can't hear anything the person on other end is saying at all. I've even bought and replaced the earpiece speaker twice thinking maybe it had blown or gotten wet or something but it didn't help. I've cleaned the mesh covering and still nothing has helped. Is there a fix for this issue??

Hey everyone,

Got a fix, at least it works for me, and it's only temporary.

I have the same problem. iphone 4 ios 5.1.1. I found a temporary fix, while the music is playing, turn keyboard clicks on and off. I will also get the volume back with any alert notifications. It seems any system sound will return speaker, wired, or bluetooth headphones back to normal volume. But it only works until you've paused the music, upon restart the volume is reduced and you have to do it again.

Rebooting seems to help also.
