Need help with a Asus 27" monitor with webcam problem.

Need help with a Asus 27" monitor I bought. Model VK278Q. The issue is that the webcam will not work properly. Various applications can see the webcam, but I just get a black box. From what I have read, the issue seems to be that there are no official drivers for the webcam.

I thought someone in this community might be able to offer some help before I return the monitor. I read somewhere that it may be possible to tweat the OS so that the iSight software will work for the monitor webcam.

Thx

I finally realized after hours of reading these forums, switching between HDMI and DVI cables, downloading various software, and testing all of the solutions provided, that the built-in webcam actually connects separately through the USB connection on the monitor. Duh!

Seems counterintuitive for a built in camera to require extra cables. I simply added a USB cable from the monitor to my 2014 mac mini (yosemite 10.10.5) then set the camera in Skype preferences to the ASUS USB2.0 camera that it recognized - And voila!

Just a comment on this.

I also bought ASUS VK278Q. It is a really nice monitor, but I bought it so I also could use the webcam (else there are other and cheaper monitors without the webcam). Basically, I contacted ASUS Support and they are ****** and cannot help with anything. They will not change their product description saying that the monitor AND WEBCAM will work on Mac OSX - THIS IS WRONG! Really bad support from ASUS.

Anyway, I tried rkhedges approach with Camtwist and it worked!

There was a link fault (wrong software) in rkhedges post. You can find Camtwist here: http://camtwist.en.softonic.com/mac/download#downloading

Remember to click 'select' on your saved setup under step 3.

Thanks rkhedges!

Hi Everyone - after reading this thread since I myself have a Mac Mini and also the Asus monitor with Webcam, I chose the "iGlasses" app.

I downloaded a demo first since I was wary of spending more money after researching the best driver/monitor.

IT WORKS!

The camtastic app was like reading Greek upside down.

Since the iGlasses app worked in my other applications, Facetime, Skype, PhotoBooth, Lync, etc, I decided to go ahead an buy it. The cool thing is that company that makes it says that all subsequent updates of the product are free.

I have been trying various solutions for this same issue for months, and I have come up with something that (hopefully) someone in here or someone at Apple can use to help us find a solution.

Anyway, the camera's LED does come on in any application, but the screen remains black.

EXCEPT - Yahoo messenger. If I load Yahoo Messenger (the Yahoo made app itself) and click the webcam broadcast button, the camera works spendidly.

Note that I had to UNINSTALL iGlasses for this test. I was trying that one as several in this thread have suggested, but it made Yahoo Messenger also show black (and, for me, it didn't seem to work correctly as a workaround, anyway - still a black screen).

So, any ideas from this data?

Ok,

Camtwist is the way to go for a work around.

Download and install: http://camtwiststudio.com/download/

Run Camtwist:

You will see across the top Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Settings

Step 1 and 3 are the only ones you need to pay attention then settings ok

Step 1 - select webcam

Click select at the bottom.

Step 3 - You should see a webcam checked

Settings - camera - select ASUS USB XXXX

Now under Step 3

Save Setup (pop up window) name it what ever you want click save

Now under Step 3 you will see what you just created under Saved setups..

Saved setups:

Highlight the one you just created and select Auto load at the bottom.

NOW THIS IS THE DEAL...if you use Google+'s video chat you need to go into Google's chat settings and change your camera to ASUS XXX and then Google+ falls into the same instruction as Facetime, and Photo booth

For Facetime, Photo Booth and Google+ Chat/Video...it doesn't matter if you start Camtwist or the other app first but you have to run both at the begining until your cam starts working if it doesn't startup within a about 20 seconds click on the Saved Setup you made and it should start. Now once the camera is working you can actually close/quit Camtwist and your cam will still work until you close Skype, facetime, or Photo booth app.

I have tested this on Mountain Lion on several different MBPs and Mac Airs....hope this helps.

Here is the odd thing, Yahoo messenger functions perfectly without using camtwist but I couldn't get skype to work with camtwist at all..

I hope Apple updates its camera drivers soon to natively support this camera but until then....use Camtwist

Hello PineapplePirate.

Can you pls describe in as much detail as you have time for:

  • What combination of software you use to make this work (iGlasses, CamTwist, etc)
  • a typical use case for how you make it all work. That is, you want to use the camera for x purpose and how you go about doing so

Everyone on this thread has been great. Getting a specific use case I think will be very helpful.

Glad you made things work!

JohnLane -

I'd like to reiterate that the camera works with Yahoo Messenger out of the box. That means that the driver is not the problem, but it is somewhere at higher layer. If you install Yahoo Messenger and click the feature to broadcast a webcam, it works fine. So, we need to figure out what's making it not get recognized from Skype, Photobooth, Facetime, etc.

John, you have to run cam twist, create a "saved setup" and give it name...then select this "saved setup" name in face time or skype.

It works everytime, I have done this on 3 different mac book airs and pros with different monitors...the geniouses were i worked bought these stupid monitors with out checking with (me, I work in the IT department) about the compatability...anyway, it took me all of about an hour of research to find a few programs that would allow for usage of the Ausus Brightcam with a Mac and camtwist is the best out for now...

Ausus has no plan to develop anytype of drivers for this because Apple has their own unique software for cams..but native resolution of this cam is why you only get a black screen and using camtwist actually lowers the resolution to 680x400 i believe which allows it work with Facetime and skype...Now if you use Yahoo Chat the cam will work natively with out using Camtwist.

ChefJoef

Joe.....Yahoo Messenger has it's own set of Camera software and doesn't rely on Apple's native drivers...They are a bit generic but work so...you are right, it's not a hardware issue or software issue...it's the issue that apple's native cam software doesn't support this particular camera or that this particular camera doesn't like apples software...so you can point the finger eitherway...bottom line...OSX wont run this cam...

Hi all. I am revisiting to see if anyone who was kind enough to weigh in has learned anything new.

I do recognize this is an uphill battle and the trolls at Asus have already won. But, sometimes things do change and / or some creative mind finds a solution. For me, CamTwist and the other discussed work arounds did not work.

I hope this post produces a email alert to the gang here and we get some new info.

Thanks again.

I just bought the 24" version of the same monitor (VK248H).

It seems that improvements have been made since the camera now works correctly on all applications I tested (including Skype, PhotoBoot, MacJournal, Home Inventory) with the exception of Face Time. I find myself so lucky and I resign myself to live without Face Time on this computer.

But iGlasses works perfectly and allows to solve the problem in addition to many other benefits, as long as we agreed to pay $ 20.

iGlasses for Mac - Effects and Adjustments for your Webcam, iSight, FaceTime Camera - Ecamm Network

It might be appropriate to recontact again in the case of Asus VK278.
