My Iphone Wi-fi does not work. I've tried almost everything...

Hi,

I have a Iphone 4S about 4 months now. At first my wi-fi connection worked just fine, but after upgrading my firmware from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 i started to have some serious and frustrating problems: My wi-fi connection stoped working!

Now, i've tried almost everything:

* Reset my network settings

* Reset all settings

* Erase all content and settings...

Well, if I continue this erasing and resetting... maybe my iphone will learn how to fly directly to my bedroom wall...

I bought my iphone in another country (yep, unlocked). I've tried to donwgrade once but since i don't have the SHSH Blobs from firmware 5.0.1... well... do i have to say what happened? At the end of the day and hours and hours of downloads.. guess what? still not working...

And it's not just in my house, it's everywhere!

The only thing he gives me is this: " Could not scan for wireless networks"

By the way any other mobile connection works just fine, thanks... Just my wi-fi decided to give me a hard time and an enormous headache.

Someone, please... Help me...

I'm starting to accept the idea of waiting for the next update out to try to solve my problem ... And the problem with the Iphone 4s is not the hardware, the wifi worked after an unsuccessful downgrade that forced me to restore the firmware to 5.1.1, but stopped again for no apparent reason.

I had a wifi problem too. Not exactly the same as you all have but no wifi. I lost wifi after the ios 5.1.1 upgrade. It worked for a few weeks but then it stopped working. The on-off was grey so I could not switch it on anymore. I have send it to Apple 2 times and it worked for a week and then same problem.

I took my sim card out and restart my iphone 4 and the wifi was working again. Without the sim. I put the sim back again and it is still working now for about 5 weeks. No problem.

I don`t say it will work with you but it is worth a try.

I was excited to see someone said they had a fix. Unfortunately no matter how many times I try to join the ad hoc network i get the "could not scan for wireless networks" error message. I upgraded to latest OS quite some time back so I am not suspecting an OS change caused it.

I only noticed the problem today when I tried to create a personal hotspot but there was no option for wi-fi. Only bluetooth and USB. It was as if the phone knew it had no wifi available???

Unlike in the US, in Thailand the 3G data can be shared as a personal hotspot for no additional charge (yet) for 5 connections. When I visited the US, I bought an AT&T sim and was initially able to do this for about a week. then the personal hotspot menu was replaced with a sign up for hotspot sharing option. Initially, I learned that I could reset the phone and get about a days worth of sharing for free before the phone loaded a new menu. Eventually I got tired of the workaround and paid the high price for the hotspot capability.

When I got back to Thailand, I had the AT&T menu and couldn't make it go away! Tech support here had no idea what I was talking about and just thought that a US phone was different (when it was actually bought in Thailand).

Eventually I restored the phone and was back in hotspot sharing buisness. I use the hotspot feature all the time. So I had almost 100% certainty when the wifi hotspot option was gone that it was the carrier finally realizing they could charge more for this and that they had done some forced menu change to remove wi-fi sharing for personal hotspot. Well after hours of trying to explain this somewhat complex problem I was assured that no thay did not.

Then when I went home, no wi-fi at home either! Back to tech support. They think it is a hardware problem with the phone. I don't want to be without a phone yet. Still under warranty though so I will change it soon if there is not solution here.

i have the same problem "could not scan for wireless networks". i thought it must be a hardware problem, with the antennae. I live in Sri Lanka where there is zero support for iphones. i bought mine in Malaysia (unlocked!) and it was fine till a few days ago. i used it for a while with the iOS 5.1.1 also but i dont know what the **** is wrong now.

A friend suggested i take it to bangkok for a replacement.

Im not even sure if it is actually a hardware problem or a software problem.

If someone who lives in a country with actual support can please get it verified as hardware and if i should try and get it replaced or whether i should ride it out till iOS 6, i would appreciate it alot! Cuz lets face it :its hard to love a crippled iphone!

In my case, the hardware was not the problem. I Bought my Iphone at Abu Dhabi (unlocked) and it worked just fine until that **** "upgrade to 5.1.1" showed up! After that, i've tried a hundred things, i even lost my contacts but, thank god, i've make a "Icloud's backup" before start reseting everything.

When restored the fist time, it worked for 1 month, but it stoped again for no reason. If i had a hardware problem, the wifi would've never work...right... Because a hardware problem comes from factory... Am i Right?

I think so too, cuz it worked fine till recently, so its strange that it could be a hardware problem. but its hard to say, it could be that it just started acting up now instead of immediately (pls dont ask why 🙂).

it would be much better for me if it is infact a software than hardware problem, cuz otherwise i have to fly this out of my country to try to solve it!

i really hope the new OS will solve the problem, cuz its become such a headache!

Btw thanks to your thread and others alike i feel much better, cuz trying to get any support from apple is like talking to a brick wall. i was very dissappointed.

hi. I have an iPhone 4S and it was working very well but after upgrading to IOS6 i started to have a lot of problems: If I am writing a message, the app closes unexpectedly, I cannot listen radio because it happens the same and I cannot connect to wifi... what can I do? I am not happy with IOS6 and I downloaded it a few hours ago!

No idea what is wrong. Now, not only no wi-fi but also no bluetooth. Could this many people have had a hardware problem all at the same time? It did NOT coincide with my software update so I do not think it has anything to do with that. After a reset it sometimes appears but as soon as it tries to join the network it hunts and hints and then fails.

Today, I broke down and went to the Genius Bar with my 4s due to not having any WiFi capabilities at all, i.e. the on/off was greyed out as of the 6.0 update. The 5.1.1 update caused my 4s to not be able to search for or connect to WiFi.

They took my phone and attempted to do a complete system reset on it, but the result was the same. I am lucky that my phone was under warranty and they replaced it. I overheard the tech working on my phone talking to the tech that had initially been attempting to help me and he said that the phones are made in different places and the hardware parts aren't always the same, but they are comparable parts. He then said that some of these parts are not compatible with the software updates and the phones are not able to recognize them. So, for all of you that are having issues with bluetooth or WiFi, it is a hardware problem created by the software update. The software is not compatible with those parts and become unrecognized. Your best bet is to get to an Apple store if you can. Good luck to you all!

Taking out the SIM, rebooting and accessing WIFI without the SIM worked. Then, I put the SIM back in, was able to browse the Interent with the SIM, also.

My iPhone 4 was updated to iOS6, recently, and could access several other WIFI networks and Internet, but suddenly not the one I use every day, lol. Tried reloading the phone, etc--everything--I could connect to this specific WIFI network, but not get to the Internet until I tried the SIM trick. Every device (6 of them) on my desk could access Interent via this WIFI network, except my iPhone post iOS6 upgrade (worked with 5.x). Thanks for the tip!😎

Hey! My life is good again!

I did the following because I was just about to send it in for repairs and it miraculously detected wifi again. Cant guarantee it will work for you, but its worth a shot if you havent already tried it.

Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and Settings

It will then ask to confirm so do that.

make sure you back up your phone on your computer or icloud first.

Then your phone will be like when you first got it, brand new. Set it up ( that is it will ask for Apple ID, language and blah blah blah). when it comes to network settings the wifi connection will get detected, atleast thats what happened to mine. You can then plug your phone in to your computer and restore it and wifi still works.

My phone is working briliiantly again. I dont know how to explain what happened. I hope this works out for you!

Goodluck!
