Something loose in new iPhone 5

I received my iPhone 5 today and noticed that something is rattling inside when I shake the phone. Sounds like the battery.

Anyone else having that problem?

iPhone 5, iOS 6

Ok guys. I have the same rattle and I believe I have narrowed it down to one possibility. The only moving part in the phone is the vibrating mechanism. The way it works is basically an unbalanced weight that is spun by a motor. With all motors there is a little "slop" and this lets the mechanism move slightly when jarred. I believe that is what us causing the rattle and I will verify this tomorrow after work by trying to duplicate it on my old 4s with the back off. I'll let you know what I find.

Yep, that has been established. Some are worse than others. Go into an Apple store and tap on the top, back of display units. I just happened to get one that is worse than others, and they refuse to acknowledge or replace mine, acting as if I'm crazy. Answering a previous question: no, they don't replace for this. Also, mine has a loose sleep/wake button that adds to the annoying ping.

I was reading more posts and some people with the "rattle" actually have what others are describing as a thud. Apparently they are the owners with the loose batteries in there phones . I thought we had a one loose component issue with our phones and here more things are popping up. I know it is unavoidable to have defects when millions of phones are produced and sold so rapidly I just hope Apple continues to stand behind their products like they have in the past. I would encourage anyone with any problems including "scratchgate" victims to address the issues sooner than later. I would hate to see someone turn in a scratchgate phone for unrelated warranty issues and get denied because the phone looks abused

My girlfriend picked up her iPhone 5 at the Apple Store on Saturday and just noticed tonight that it has the loose battery problem. Called Apple Care and since the nearest Apple Store is 2 hours away, they said they would send one ASAP, but needed to put a hold on her credit card until the old one was returned. After 45 minutes of reapeatedly going on hold ("Genius" kept putting shipping address as billing address, causing card rejection), they finally said she was all set, but couldn't say for sure whether the replacement would be a new or refurb phone. I hope it's new, because replacing a defective, 4-day old phone with a refurb is unacceptable.

Apple, you are slipping 😟

(For those of you who might have missed it, the faint rattling of the camera lens is normal. The louder, heavier thud of the loose battery is the sound of poor quality control, and is NOT normal.)

Same issue. Definite thud, rather than rattle.

Screen press solves it for a short while, then it comes back again.

Apple have agreed to forward replace the phone as it was bought in the US, and I'm now in NZ.

Put a hold on my credit card for the value of the replacement so that I don't run off with two phones!

Have said 3-5 business days on an express replacement.

Here's hoping the replacement doesn't have the same issues.

I know right?! A-hole.

At least have the decency to say (which should become the protocall for these occurences)...

..."I'm sorry sir/mam, these rattles are common, though do not occur on every iphone 5. You have purchased one that has a more pronounced ping/rattle and we apologize, but we cannot replace the phone because we cannot possibly replace millions of phones. We cannot fix it because it is not our policy to do so, nor are we equipped or knowledgable enough to be able to do so. You have to deal with your annoying little ping/rattle."

hahaha...when I came to them with the same problem, they basically told me to buy another phone if I didn't like it!

I just the iPhone 5 from the 2nd batch and its perfect no rattle what so ever , no light link or dings, the first batch of iPhones were bad, do not let the guy at the genuines bar tell u otherwise, the phone should not rattle when u shake it the only rattle u should hear is when u tap it by the camera which is normal other then that it should be solid

Helo,

I you tap on the back of the iPhones 4, 4S, 5 they all make the same sound(some are more noticeable than others). If you have time go to a Bestbuy store or any store that sell cell-phones and tap on any smart phone back, you will hear a similar sound if not the same. You can returned the phone a 1,000 times and they all will have a sound, more or less.

The bottons move freely and there for they will rattles to some degee, specially if they are matal. The iPhone 6 when it comes out it will also have a sound, unless they remove all bottons and other parts that can move. For some this sound could be very annoying for others not a issue. Check other manufacture's phones and you will also hear the sound in them. It is very sad that we have become too perfectionist in a very imperfect world.
