help!!
if you purchased apple care along with your new iphone, just take it to the apple store and it will be repaired/replaced for $49.95.
I wish but I'm cheap and didn't do the apple care
In retrospect, has being "cheap" saved you any money?
no.. so i'm trying to find help as to what i should do.. minus the apple care:(
Hi, may I ask what happened? How/did you get it fixed?!
The only thing you can do is pay full price for a new phone. Dropping the phone is not apple's fault.
but I DIDN'T drop it! I didn't sit on it! I carried it out to the car, put it in the car holder, carried it indoors, put it on the worktop, carried it from one room to another in a fluffy dressing gown pocket, took it out & put it on top of the stereo cabinet, drank a cup of tea, picked the phone up, started to use it, noticed it was cracked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh and I would have noticed if it were damaged earlier, I'm still in the 'keep polishing the new toy' phase!
You should still be able to purchase Apple Care ($99). Not sure why you would have to pay another $49 on top of that.
You might just try going in and explaining the situation - worth a try (good luck).
Help! What do I do?!?!?!?
Really? Screens don't just crack. You had to have either dropped it or someone else picked it up and dropped it then set it back on top of the stero cabinet.
As you don't have the Apple care I would try and repair it for yourself.

Do a search for iPhone 5 screens
that's what's so frustrating, no-one had touched it, it was within my sight the whole time. I just don't get it, one moment I was showing it to a friend (oooh, shiny, would've noticed something amiss when I was showing it off) and half hour later it was cracked :-(
If you paid for the iPhone on a credit card, see if your card offers a "buyer protection plan" of some sort. Such plans often cover user damage (and theft) for the first 90 days of ownership, as well as an extended warranty for free. This has saved me many times ...
actually looks pretty easy to do it DIY (esp with an engineer hubby!) just got to wait for someone to start selling replacement screens, that is if Apple are disinclined to replace it for me.
Have got an appointment at the genius bar Monday (nothing available til then) I will post updates...
