Dropped iphone now lost contacts- no backup

Dropped my iphone 4 on the tiles and the glass on the back cracked but there was no damage to the casing-my contacts were still there initially but now (24 hours later) they have all disappeared. I unfortunatly don't have a back up because my laptop crashed last week, any way of restoring them or why would they have disappeared?
