How to unlink iMessage from phone number?

I recently switched over from iPhone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy S4. I used the iPhone for 2 years with iMessage on. I no longer use the iPhone. I turned off iMessage on my iPhone, I unregistered the iPhone from my Apple account. However my friends and family that own an iPhone with iMessage turned on, everytime they text my number...my new phone doesn't receive the text message. It still shows that my number is iMessage capable with the blue bubbles. And that is weird because I own an Android device now. How do I fix this issue? It's really annoying and I can't receive any texts from those people with iPhones.

Try going to appleid.apple.com to ensure that your number has been removed. That has worked for other people I know.

Hey all. I've successfully now just done this..... phew.. I had iphone4 with iMessages off no probs, and then upgraded to iphone5, which had iMassages on as default after updating operating system - I don't want this on (so switched it off) and had loads of grief trying to get txts from iphone users whose phones insisted on sending me iMessages - which I obviously never received.... Anyhow - you do this.. LOG OUT of apple ID, facetime, icloud, whatever you're logged into on your iphone (presuming you can still do that) and then switch off iMessage in settings>messages. Then get all your iPhone user contacts to DELETE any message THREADS in their phone between you and them, and ALSO do the same in your phone. The thread is telling them that you are an iMessage contact. When they now send a new message to you, their phone will tel them that you cannot be contacted via iMessage, and will send as a normal text, plus any further texts also will be sent likewise. SORTED!
