Links to User tips re migrating from iPhoto to Photos
There are a number of differences between Photos and iPhoto and some user articles and scripts to describe the differences and help with the transition in the user tips section of this forum - Photos for Mac
Photos is part of the OS rather than a separate application and is only available can can only be updated in conjunction with the OS - it can not be deleted because of being integrated into the OS - this Apple document describes more on the upgrade and the new features - Updating from iPhoto to Photos for macOS - Apple Support
The transition is much easier if you remember that Photos is a new and different program which in nearly all respects is better than iPhoto but if has new and different features and different workflows - if you take time to learn Photos and use new workflows you are very likely to like it better than iPhoto - if you expect to use your iPhoto workflows unmodified you will be extremely frustrated.
To migrate an iPhoto library to Photos drag it to the Photos icon in the Dock or open it with Photos (file menu ==> Open) or hold down the option key hile launching PHotos and in the resilting select library window select the iPhoto library you wish to migrate
