OS X El Capitan  (Mac OS X v10.11)     Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to determine if "X" is in the name and pick the one you have.  If you have an earlier version of Mac OS X, see the forums below for 10.10, 10.9, 10.8, 10.7, 10.6, 10.5, 10.4, 10.3, 10.2, 10.1,or  10.0. Otherwise see Classic Mac OS.

 

OS X Yosemite (Mac OS X v10.10)  Not to be confused for 10.1 or 10.0.  Both are discussed on the 10.3 and earlier forum.

 

OS X Mavericks (Mac OS X v10.9)     Not to be confused for Classic Mac OS (OS9) or earlier which dates from 2001 or earlier, available as boot in Macs up to 2003, and is available in PowerPC Macs as virtualization through Mac OS X 10.4.11 in Classic environment.

 

OS X Mountain Lion (Mac OS X v10.8)     Not to be confused for Mac OS 8.   See the Classic forum for that. And not to be confused for iOS 8.

 

Mac OS X v10.7 Lion     Not to be confused for System 7, or iOS 7.

 

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard

Mac OS X v10.3 and earlier     If you don't have Mac OS X, but have a Mac older than 2001, you may have Classic Mac OS (OS9, OS8 & System 7).  Classic operating system is available to Macs older than 2006 as well with a PowerPC processor.  Not to be confused for 10.10.3 (a Yosemite operating system).
