How To Protect Your Apple Device (And How Not To) - iPhone
Note: This is about protecting the hardware of your device from drops, scratches, fumbles, and splashes- not from malware or other software related threats. Regarding that, see this excellent User Tip - Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community
After getting your Apple device, you'll likely want to jump right in and start using it. However, it's not only prudent, but necessary, to take measures to protect your device. A small amount of "insurance" money spent on a case or other protector can make a big difference if you damage it, as it may save you from much more expensive repairs to the actual device.
How To Protect Your iPhone
iPhones are naturally the most prone to damage. They're carried around, held in one hand, touch countless surfaces, and are small enough to slip away easily. Your iPhone should always be in a case, for the most part. There are two main exterior protectors you should use- a screen protector and a case.
Screen protectors may be the most important thing you can put on your phone. A screen replacement can cost anywhere from $149 to $349- but a good package of screen protectors will generally only cost $15 or $20. In the event of a mild accident, you can simply replace it and be on your way again. It's not only drops, either- putting your phone in your pocket, purse, bag, or car can cause it to accumulate unsightly scratches. When purchasing screen protectors, tempered glass is the best choice. Plastic may be tempting for the cheaper price, but glass protects better, uses better, and looks better.
A case is equally important, especially if your iPhone has a glass back (iPhone 8 and onwards). This costs even more to repair than the screen does, with costs ranging from $349 to $599! While many favor the look of the iPhone as-is, a case should still be put on, as there may be more than cosmetic damage if you drop it.
The best case for you should be chosen with regard to your lifestyle. Expensive, heavy-duty cases that keep out water and dust may be a bit overkill for the average user, but if you regularly take your iPhone to such extremes, this could be the case for you. Thin silicon cases aren't terribly protective, but are a better choice than a rigid plastic case, which will simply transfer any shock to the iPhone itself. The best phone case for the average user will likely be a slightly flexible silicon case, with reinforcement on the corners. A waterproof case isn't always necessary, either, as iPhone is water resistant (though you certainly shouldn't depend on this). Simply putting your device in a phone bag when you think your device could get wet in just fine for most users.
How NOT To Protect Your iPhone
DIY cases are almost always a bad idea. Making a case out of duct tape, bubble wrap, or other household items may be a funny idea, but overall is not an effective way to keep your iPhone safe. When getting a case, make sure it's the right size and model for your iPhone. Your screen protector should fit snugly and not cover anything but the screen. Covering the front/back cameras, or the sensors beside them, can result in a loss in functionality or effectiveness of Face ID, LiDAR (if equipped), Portrait Mode, ambient light sensing, and other important features.
When cleaning your iPhone, never dunk it in any liquid (especially cleaning agents) and keep it away from the ports and openings. Your iPhone might be okay- but it might not, and that's hardly a risk you want to take. Bleach and hydrogen peroxide are not good options. Instead, opt for a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution, or bleach-free disinfecting wipes. Apple has detailed cleaning instructions for each model here.
AppleCare+
AppleCare+ is a relatively cheap way to protect your device from the hazards of everyday life. Costs range from $79 to $269 for two-year coverage, depending on your iPhone model and if you want coverage for theft and loss or not. With AppleCare+, you receive two incidents of accidental damage per year (12 months), subject only to a small deductible- a fraction of the standard costs for repair. Screen and back glass repair is now just $29, with anything else $99. Lost your iPhone? Get it replaced for a paltry $149. If you like your iPhone to look au naturel, this is the option for you.
Protect your device, and you'll enjoy the peace of mind that comes with it.
