How To Protect Your Apple Device (And How Not To) - iPad
Note: This is about protecting the hardware of your device from drops, scratches, fumbles, and splashes- not from malware or other software related threats. Regarding that, see this excellent User Tip - Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community
After getting your Apple device, you'll likely want to jump right in and start using it. However, it's not only prudent, but necessary, to take measures to protect your device. A small amount of "insurance" money spent on a case or other protector can make a big difference if you damage it, as it may save you from much more expensive repairs to the actual device.
How To Protect Your iPad
iPads are less prone to damage than iPhone, but still should be protected appropriately. Depending on your usage pattern for your iPad, you may need more or less coverage. Many cases are simply designed to ward off scratches, which may be ideal if you don't use your iPad in risky areas.
Screen protectors are important, but less so on iPad. Screen replacement is subject to the same cost as any other accident, and depends on the exact model. It can be as low as $249 for an iPad 2, but can be as high as $749 for an iPad Pro. Screen protectors generally cost more for iPad than for iPhone, but you probably don't need it to be as robust. You can likely get away with a plastic one here, if you so choose.
A case is probably more important for your iPad, as your iPad probably won't be scratched by keys in a purse, but will almost certainly be dropped. A good case should leave all openings clear and cover the corners well. If you need your iPad in wet conditions, a waterproof case or bag is a must, as iPad isn't water resistant at all. Many people like cases that fold over, though it should be noted that only certain models (like Apple's Smart Cover) contain magnets that auto-sleep the iPad when it closes. Another thing to consider- smart accessories, such as Smart Keyboard or Apple Pencil. Make sure the case allows room to attach them!
How NOT To Protect Your iPad
When getting a case, make sure it's the right size and model for your iPad. Your screen protector should fit snugly and not cover anything but the screen. Covering the front/back cameras, or the sensors beside them, can result in a loss in functionality or effectiveness of Face ID, LiDAR (if equipped), Portrait Mode, ambient light sensing, and other important features.
When cleaning your iPad, never dunk it in any liquid (especially cleaning agents) and keep it away from the ports and openings. Your device might be okay- but it might not, and that's hardly a risk you want to take. Bleach and hydrogen peroxide are not good options. Instead, opt for a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution, or bleach-free disinfecting wipes. Your screen should be treated with extra care, too, as iPad has an oleophobic (oil-repelling) coating on the screen. Simply wipe iPad's screen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands.
AppleCare+
AppleCare+ is a relatively cheap way to protect your device from the hazards of everyday life. Costs range from $69 to $149 for two-year coverage, depending on your iPad model. With AppleCare+, you receive two incidents of accidental damage per year (12 months), subject only to a small $49 deductible- a fraction of the standard costs for repair or replacement. With the cheapest AppleCare+ costs on the major device market, AppleCare+ is justifiable even if your iPad leads a fairly tame life.
Protect your device, and you'll enjoy the peace of mind that comes with it.
