Really and honestly DELETE my Gmail deleted email in Mac Mail…

I've tried every conceivable setting and nothing works. When I deleted something in Mac Mail the email stays in the Gmail "All Mail" mailbox. I do not want this behavior.

On the iPad and iPhone it's not a problem since there is an option to trash and not archive. But I can't get this to work with Mac Mail. How can I get this done?

On the Gmail side I've configured "Forwarding & IMAP/POP" "Move the message to the Trash " and "Immediately delete message forever" and neither of those worked.

On the Mac Mail side I've configured the Mailbox Behavior's "Trash" section in every possible way.

Mac Mail is the only client that is still keeping deleted items in "All Mail".

Not exactly. ON android, attempting to delete an eMail the standard way results in it being 'Archived' and not deleted. This is a guess, but it's possible that your Mac Mail program is doing the same, but not remiving the All Mail entry when adding the Archived folder entry.

If that is the case, you may be able to see all of the Mail you 'deleted' in the Archived folder and periodically delete them permaneantly using a browser.

That's Gmail. It is set to keep all of your email, whether you delete it or not, in the All Mail folder.

Honestly, how do you expect Google to mine all of your data if it lets you delete your old email?

Mail may be the only client that shows you the All Mail "filter" from Gmail.

I tried setting up Gmail the same way, but I don't think it works the way we expect it to.

That's not true at all... Within Gmail it deletes it permanently (i.e. it's nowhere to be found including "All Mail") with the "Move the message to the Trash " and "Immediately delete message forever" enabled. So their own client has a way to do it. Apple has a way to do it on the iPad and iPhone. The only place I can't get it done is Mac Mail and I'm just hoping I'm missing a setting somewhere.

Their "client" is their web interface, which is the only place I know of to remove them.

Gmail isn't true IMAP, so it's got some flakeyness, which I suppose could be programmed into a client, but I doubt Apple would waste time coding specifically for Gmail. They've been trying with Exchange/Outlook and that has been a tremendous failure.

The iPad and iPhone use a different system.

You're not, that is how Gmail works, if you want to empty the All Mail folder you do it on the website, not the client (you can not see the All Mail folder on most clients, Mail excepted) And you can suppress the display of the All Mail folder if it bothers you.

Yes, this is annoying. The following works - I just tested it.

In your Mac Mail preferences:

Gmail > Mailbox Behaviors :

User uploaded file

In your Google Gmail settings:

Forwarding and POP/IMAP

User uploaded file

With the above settings, delete a Gmail mail item on the Mac. Then, while still in Mac Mail, choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items... > Gmail... If you turn on Auto-Expunge above, it will force messages to archive.

When you quit Mac Mail, the item you deleted will now disappear from the Google Gmail server too, in All Mail, and Inbox.

Here is the Mac OS X hints article from Fall 2011 that discusses this fix on older releases of OS X.
