The Safari application cannot be opened?

I shut down my computer and when I turned it on I tried to launch Safari. I got the following message. The application Safari can't be opened. I checked the application in Finder, but could discover anything since it again couldn't launch therefore I couldn't access system preferences. My internet connection is fine. My software is completely up to date. Yosemite 10.10.1.

Also, you could try a Safe Boot and try opening Safari directly from the Applications folder rather than the Dock. If it launches, quit Safari and restart the Mac as normal from the Apple menu and test again.

Ginger,

If you tried to update to Safari 8.0.1, please see this thread in the Safari forums:

Safari update 8.0.1

It seems Apple posted an update but pulled it shortly after, leaving Safari unresponsive.

Paul, there is a similar discussion of this issue in the Lounge.
