Video RM or TS

Hi Out there!

I'm interested to know what is the difference - or should I say , what are - Video RM & Video TS (also Audio TS), as I'd like to know if I need to copy all these files when copying a DVD. When you're watching a DVD from your hard disc you are required to open the video TS file.

I'd be also interested to know if it's possible just to copy the audio track (this is a DVD of my group playing and recorded in and by a small jazz club) as the audio folder seems to be empty - but the DVD has picture and sound no problem.

Any suggestions and remarks?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

The VIDEO_TS folder is basically all you need for a standard video DVD.

The AUDIO_TS folder will hold the audio for a DVD-AUDIO disk, but is created blank for a standard video disk.

The VIDEO_RM folder is a non-standard folder created by Philips writers, and doesn't have any impact on the video for most playback devices. You can safely ignore it.

Because all the data (video and audio) exists in a "muxed" (combined) format in files in the VIDEO_TS folder, you can't simply pull out an audio file. You need to find an application that will "demux" the audio from the video. Handbrake (free) will extract Quicktime files from the DVD, from which you can export the audio only.
