Hide extensions

Hide extensions

Does anybody know of a real simple way to have the finder hide the extensions by default? Its kind of annoying to do it one by one.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.9), 2.16 Core2Duo

Yes, Open the finders preferences from the menu bar. Select Advanced and un-check the box "Show all File Extensions"

Its already unchecked, and there are a ton of extensions still showing. any ideas?

A point to note, most of these were documents carried over from an old computer.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:

tell application "Finder"
set extension hidden of every file of entire contents of (selection as alias) to true
end tell

Select the folder enclosing the documents in the Finder, and press the Run button in the Script Editor. If they are enclosed by multiple folders or are at different levels in the folder structure, select the first folder which encloses all the documents.
