Brightness level question

I use a EyeOne Display 2 to calibrate my monitors. on the brightness it shows a recommended setting of 120 for LCD's. I have a 23" ACD.

what is the ideal brightness level for accurate color work?

15" 2.4ghz MacBook Pro C2D, 4gb RAM, 23" ACD, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

The brightness (luminance) value is something that changes depending on what viewing environment you are in, as well as what display you have. For LCDs, the typical setting is supposed to be between 110 candelas in a very dark or dim room, while the maximum setting to be around 130 candelas in a reasonable lit room. When doing color work at all, keep all light dim and not directly behind you to rid of glare on your display. I have always set my display at around 128 because that is the "hot spot" in which my display shows its maximum color gamut while being at my desired brightness level. Where I work, we have our 20 inch ACD set at 120 because they seem to function best around this brightness level. Things may be different for a 23 incher, but I would recommend starting at 120 and go down from there if things still seem too bright. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Not a problem! Always glad to help.

I have always heard that the 24 inch iMac panel is super bright. I know a photographer/color calibrator who has one down in Texas who has one and has his brightness level set way down on the lowest bar of the backlight gauge through the OS. He says he has to keep it this low for two reasons, it is super tough to look at a bright display all day, and two, it makes the color and photos on display look much better when set correctly.

Just always remember that it is different for all displays, and tweaking here and there is always a good thing to try. Over time, the backlight in your display will degrade and you may have to bump up the brightness a little bit in order to get that same level that you used to be able to get. Its always good to calibrate weekly, but most people can get away with calibrating every few weeks.

Cheers!
