10.4.10- Oy! Can I go back to 10.4.9??

Since the update:

1- My pb G4 with Cinema Display (white) and logitech wireless IR keyboard and mouse would not reboot, only a blue screen (reminiscent of ... you know... PCs!). I powered it down- twice. The second time, I removed all the peripherals and rebooted- fine.

2- my Utilities- including Disk Utility- have been moved to Applications "X" folder ( Utilities is now empty, had to use Spotlight to find Disk Utility) Ran disk utility, verify permissions sufficed.

3- Shut down and rebooted with peripherals. The IR device for the keyboard/mouse combo would not power on, no green light. I have a spare IR, so I plugged that in. It lit, but does not function unless it is plugged in directly to the pb, instead of using the Cinema Display (USB version 1) slots in the back- which I had been using for this device since 2003.

So is the problem with my USB ports on the Cinema display something to do with the display itself or the 10.4.10 update? Did the update fry my Cinema display ports or my first IR device and mess with my second or did both IR devices just happen to have a problem after 10.4.10? Or perhaps did the Cinema display port suddenly die coincidentally at the same time as 10.4.10 was installed?

I came to this forum to find out if I am alone, I see others lost printers and their Utilities folders- I wonder if their utilities are also in the new "X" folder in Applications?

I wish I had a dual boot from 10.4.9 as some others here have said, then I'd know if it was the update or the hardware.

I had no issues using 10.4.9. Someone on another thread said their printer peripherals were fine after they installed "cups". What are "cups"? I'd like to go back to 10.4.9 until they figure out all these bugs in 10.4.10 or at least to see if that's the issue with my IR keyboard and mouse device, is there a way to do that?

If 10.4.10 disables the ports on the back of my Cinema display, I can't use the display- because the pb is closed- and the pb USB ports are needed by other devices. If there isn't a way to go back to 10.4.9, Are my only other options wiping the drive and cloning one of my other pbs on 10.4.9 or waiting for them to fix 10.4.10?

Augh. I'm clicking my red sparkly shoes 3 and repeating "There's no OS X like 10.4.9, There's no OS X like 10.4.9, There's no OS X like 10.4.9"

Thanks for any help.

Powerbook G4 12" & 17" (10.4.6) Powerbook G4 15", Mac OS X (10.4.10), and OS X 10.4.9 on 4 powerbook G4s, 12, 17, 17 and 15

Insert installation DVD.
Choose "Install Mac OSX"
Restart.
Choose "Archive & Install"
Proceed.
After installation, load all the updates offered by Software Update, except 10.4.10 of course.
Download and install the combo update 10.4.9 instead.

Warning: I did that and not all applications are saved. I had to re-install Missing Sync, and Photoshop CS is wonky and shuts down as soon as I click on the drop-down menu for adding text.

There's two 10.4.9 combo updates for PPC listed, but they seem to be the same thing:

Interesting- thank you for the warning. I will report back when I am done.

FWIW, I dl'd and installed the 10.4.10 combo update, and then it was worse, I had no way to access my USB IR keyboard and mouse, to copy data... So I rebooted the pb as a firewire drive to copy files to another pb and that transfer was too slow so I tried to stop the transfer. It would not stop. I never saw a pb rebooted as a firewire drive freeze before. Now I have rebooted the 10.4.10 pb as a standalone pb, hooked it up to an external drive by firewire 8.0 and am dumping the contents onto the external drive by way of back up.
2 hours.

I also tried swapping the USB ports that worked with the ones that didn't, and they all seemed to stop working with the mouse and keyboard.

1 MILLION THANKS
more when I get back

I'm not quite sure what you see, but there is only one Combo update for PPC's listed. (There is a Server version but it is only for that product.) Anyway, the direct link is

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1049comboupdateppc.html

However, your best bet I think is to boot from your original Tiger installer disk & run Disk Repair in Disk Utilities (from the Utilities menu at the installer screen) before you do anything else.

I have never understood the difference between verify permissions and repair permissions also the difference between Verify Disk and Repair Disk. I thought I should only repair permissions or the disk if the verify recommended it. But I am doing it all now!

So far so good... more when I get the updates installed and try to get it back with the keyboard, mouse etc...

Many many many thanks...

The good news is that good 'ol 10.4.9 is back and up and running and basically it looks like every little thing is there with small adjustments (I haven't checked everything, but Skype is there, the headset works, my EyeTV Hybrid works, I had to tell System Preferences Print Fax to accept faxes)... but...now both USB ports on the back of my Cinema display are dead.

Even after the 10.4.10 update, the USB ports, at least one of them, worked, with both the printer and the keyboard/mouse.

Using a cinema display with a powerbook means I have to use one of the powerbook's USB ports for the Cinema display, and the other for a USB hub. Now the 7 port hub is full with the addition of the printer and the IR keyboard and mouse. I do need the ports on the back of the Cinema display to work.

So on the one hand, this thread is complete, because you showed me how to go back to 10.4.9 - THANK YOU.

Its possible that the usb ports on the back of the Cinema display just happened to die at the same time as this 10.4.10 install, but it seems more likely that 10.4.10 wrecked them.

I'm pretty sure the applecare on my Cinema display has expired. Not sure where to go to get info on a hardware test for those Cinema ports.

I'm pretty well twisted on this for tonight.

Again, MANY thanks for help.

Too late to edit my last message- this last issue with the Cinema display USB ports was actually a really stupid mistake on my part. (No computer drama fixed without me doing something reeeeeeaaallly dumb)

I had plugged in the USB cable from the Cinema display into the wrong port on the powerbook. I guess those ports are not quite idiot proof enough for me.

BUT- the problem with the USB ports happened with 10.4.10, I only started pulling out USB cables and switching them around AFTER 10.4.10 and the problems I described above.

I am VERY happy to be back on 10.4.9.

Thank you again!
