Would it kill Apple to put up a notice saying that there are some issues with the SuperDrive 2.1 update, that's it's been removed and a new update is on its way?
As a new Mac user I'm disappointed that Apple would have such poor quality assurance to release such an update, and that thereafter would admit to nothing and keep their customers in the dark.
I just got off of the phone with techsupport, who claimed to have heard nothing about any such issue. I honestly expected better.
Same problem here, drive died after the update. Australian Apple tech said they had no knowledge of it, advised to visit an Apple Service Provider. Visited them, they ordered a replacement drive, called when it arrived four days later, installed it in two hours.
Same here. I tried to copy over some photos off a CD and halfway through the transfer, the Superdrive was making some really weird noises, it then wound down and stopped. The copying stopped and I couldn't eject the CD. I had to restart it.
I brought it to my local Apple Store, the lady put in a CD and within seconds said it needed a new Superdrive. I also told her about the noise when the screen is dimmed, so the Inverter will be getting replaced as well. I won't have it back in my hands for 5-9 business days! What am I going to do until then? NOT GOOD!
It has been in the shop before for a couple different minor things... If this stuff is happening to Apple products, could you just imagine what Microsoft people have to live with?
I applied the update when it first came out, but didn't try to use any optical media until today (7-17). My drive won't read either data DVD's or movies. When I put them into the drive, there is some brief drive noise, then within 45 seconds the disk is ejected with no error message of any kind. Fixes or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated (although I see that lots of folks are having similar problems)
An update to my prior post. It seems that DVD's are affected, but not data CDs. Most of the data CDs I have put in have worked. This is waaay too bizarre for my taste.
I guess Apple is aware of the issue and has pulled that update from it's website... My computer is currently in for repairs... It was actually sent away because the Apple Store said they couldn't do it... I won't be getting it back anytime soon... WHAT FUN!
Well, it was only about a 2 day turn around time to get my laptop back... Way better than the 5-9 business days they initially said. They ended up replacing a few parts and double-checked everything else... Looks like I'm ready to rock again!
Once again, when something goes bad, Apple makes sure you are taken care of... At least while your under warranty that is!
As a follow up, I wanted to document that I went to the Apple Store near West Hartford, CT. The genius stated that he had not heard anything about the issue.
** NOTICE TO APPLE **
If you don't do anything about this, at least inform your genius team that there might be a problem with this firmware update. It would be so much better if I just knew that Apple was distributing information. If you pull the update from your website, then you might want to inform your genius team why you did that.

In any case, the genius told me what I thought would be the case. My MBP is out of warranty, and even though it wasn't my fault that the software update broke my drive, I am probably responsible for fixing it. He suggested calling AppleCare, determining what they say, then coming back if I don't get a resolution.
I have a feeling I will be back in the Apple store in just a few days...
***** doesn't it? That is why I buy new every year to keep the warranty... If I didn't, I sure would buy an extended warranty! I have yet to own a single Mac that hasn't had to have some kind of warranty work done. Not all the hardware in this computer is made by Apple, so of course it will go bad... 😉 Just a matter of time! Good luck with the superdrive issue, I'm back playing on mine!
Hi everyone,
my superdrive is dead too. I only realized it whrn I tried to put a cd in: the disc spinned, but it didn't show on the desktop. I tried to eject it, but it didn't work. Now I have a Superdrive with a cd stuck in and the System profiler says I have no optical unit. Great!
I really don't know how, but yesterday the superdrive re-appeared in the system profiler.
I haven't do anything, or better, after all my tries the drive resulted still dead.
It seems there's been no updates from apple, at least visible by the user....
