i took my MBP to applecare 2 weeks ago and this is what they had to say:
Hi Daniel,
I did discuss the issue with Paul Damhuis from Applecare and feels there is nothing he can do. Firstly he stated that apple does warn that firmware upgrades are at your own risk and secondly the mac was purchased so he cannot “bend the rules” even if he wanted to.
so im pretty ******* ****** off now, geezuz, next time im never going to update anything. *****!
"firmware upgrades are at your own risk"?! ***?! This particular firmware update has been recalled by Apple. Someone at Apple knows that this firmware patch is killing SuperDrives. It's not like you or I did something stupid in the process of applying their "Recommended" patch. I say you go back and try again, and let them know that you will keep trying till you get your drive repaired.
I spoke with AppleCare on the phone the other day, and the first tech told me to download a Firmware Restore program that Apple had up on their website, but it was for the Motherboard's firmware, not for the SuperDrive's firmware. So, yeah, sometimes you run into Apple employees that don't know enough about Apple Computers to be helpful.
When I called them a second time, the second tech I spoke to said that I should take my computer into an Apple store, and that the Genius bar will be able to repair my drive, even though my computer is out of warranty by 2 months, because it is a know issue.
However, I have yet to take my computer in because I haven't had the time.
