Picture Size of Movies on TV

I have a Vizio HD720p 42" Plasma TV. When I play any of my movies (including those bought from iTunes) through the Apple TV, the picture does not fill the screen? I have the AppleTV set to the 720p setting. What am I missing?

Thanks for any help.

If your viewing (Monitor, HDTV, or EDTV) device does not have built in scaling capabilities, you are limited to 4 options:

1) Watch the content in your letterboxed, pillared, or distorted display format.
2) Add an external scaling device between the TV and your viewing device. (This can be expensive as most good units start at about $500 and can quickly rise to $2000-$3000.)
3) Crop/convert the file as suggested by jtw13 to simulate a "zoom" effect.
4) Scale your files to "fill" the screen if that is all you want. This can be done as part of the encoding process in certain workflows or following the encoding process by simply opening the offending file in QT Pro, resetting the scale for display, and saving the now distorted file. NOTE: this does place your finished product in an MOV file container but does not require re-encoding the movie.
