What am I missing?
If your viewing (Monitor, HDTV, or EDTV) device does not have built in scaling capabilities, you are limited to 4 options:
1) Watch the content in your letterboxed, pillared, or distorted display format.
2) Add an external scaling device between the TV and your viewing device. (This can be expensive as most good units start at about $500 and can quickly rise to $2000-$3000.)
3) Crop/convert the file as suggested by jtw13 to simulate a "zoom" effect.
4) Scale your files to "fill" the screen if that is all you want. This can be done as part of the encoding process in certain workflows or following the encoding process by simply opening the offending file in QT Pro, resetting the scale for display, and saving the now distorted file. NOTE: this does place your finished product in an MOV file container but does not require re-encoding the movie.
