I've now seen this issue happen twice on my iPhone this morning - I'm listening to an album (Daughtry) and browsing the web (the Motley Fool) at the same time. Suddenly, the iPhone stops playing the music after about 10 minutes - in the middle of a song. I'm not sure if there is a setting somewhere that I'm unaware of, or if this is a bug. Both times seem to have close to when I single tapped on the screen while in Safari - but did not hit a link. Anyone else see anything similar?
This happened to me once, then without restoring or resetting it worked fine. Safari kept working ok, but when I switched to the iPod app, it had "reset", so it's probably what actually "crashed" with this bug.
It is a difficult one to pinpoint, but it does happen. The good thing is iTunes sends crash info, I ask that everyone allows it to do this, it's what Apple most needs right now, to know which are the top issues and be able to fix them. Sync often...
A few days later, and this problem has reoccurred. It appears that most other problems have been solved with reset's, but this one persists. I'm hoping for an update soon...
Same here. I created a thread for a related problem as well (when going through Coverflow leisurely, and listening to a song, after a few minutes of moving through Coverflow the song will stop - and iTunes will close, exiting to the home screen). VERY annoying. Can't wait to get a fix.
This is about the only major annoyance I've found with the iPhone. Definitely seems like the iPod app crashing since it reverts back to the last state, instead of in the playlist that I was in, not just pauses or stops.
While I'm hoping it's just a bug that needs to get fixed and not a problem with particular units.
I have experienced the same situation, both over WiFi and on EDGE. Additionally I have had the music stop when using Google Maps, but I am assuming that the Map widget uses WebKit as well.
I've had this also. I play multiple videos in the ipod app then ipod exits out. It got so bad that the iPhone would exit out of the ipod app as soon as I clicked it. It looks to be a memory leak. I reboot the iPhone and the memory seems to be released until I watch a few more videos. I hope this gets patched up.
Engadget confirmed this problem in their review of the iphone.
"We managed to continuously crash the iPod app while listening to music and doing other things, namely browsing. We wouldn't call it incredibly unstable, but we wouldn't say it's rock solid, either."
I've also called apple and they claim to have never heard of the problem (well now they have), they even suggested I go back to the apple store and exchange my iphone for a new one... I may try that, but I think this is a more widespread problem and a new iphone probably won't do the trick. Oh yes, and kudos to apple support, they were very nice as always.
I am having the same problem. I am already on my second iPhone - the first stopped working on the second day.. At least now I know this new issue is fairly widespread, and will hopefully be fixed with a firmware fix soon .
Same problem. Has also happened to me with the Maps app, surfing the web, even checking the weather. Glad to hear I am not alone, and hope to see a firmware fix soon.
Yes, this occurs often when browsing-usually when its loading a new page, the song stops.
Pressing the microphone clicker does something odd-it switches out of Safari (mid-load), and into the song browser window, and starts a new random song.
had the same problem the other night while surfing web via edge and listening to music. i thought it might have something to do with my e-mail auto connect every 15 minutes. just wanted to officially add myself to the roster.
for what it's worth, this problem also happens to me everytime i've tried browsing and listening to music at the same time. i'm usually using wifi to browse at home, and i've never heard a complete song play in the background for more than 2-3 min. hope by posting apple will recognize the problem. annoying but i realize this is v.1 and there's going to have to be a os service update soon once they get some field reports.
i do have to say that despite the fact safari/ipod app seem to crash quite a bit still, the system itself is pretty solid for a phone. my blackberry often required me to take the battery out to reset when an application that was running killed the os, but the iphone seems very stable. just dumps back to the home screen and keeps running like normal. never had anything worse than that.
I also wanted to throw my hat into the ring as somebody who's experiencing this problem. 8 gig iPhone, seeing the iPod app crash while surfing over both EDGE and WiFi, as well as using Google Maps once.
Certainly hope this is one of the first issue to be tackled, and soon, as crashing iPod functionality does not look good for Apple nor the iPhone. Pretty shocked this issue wasn't discovered/resolved before release - isn't listening to tunes while browsing a pretty natural thing to do on such a device?
Nothing new to add to the thread, but it's happening here also while browsing via WiFi. Just tried the power cycle thing, and hopefully ... this will work, but we need a long term fix for this.
