Cannot Backup Library - Unknown error occurred (261)

I used to be able to burn my library to DVD but now I receive the error: Unknown error occurred (261)

DVDs are good, Burner is good (I can still burn using Roxio)

I found an article regarding this at:
http://www.blue42.net/article.php?id=32

However I do not have any playlist names with 'invalid' characters in them.

HELP!

Hi well, I tried downloading itunes v7.2 again from the site that was suggested but I keep getting the messege " Safari cant open the file "itunesSetup-1.exe" because no available application can open it," I am tired of this. I just bought CD's to back up my itunes library and cant even burn them not make backups. And when I do try nothing shows up on the CD's ( they are still blank). When I try to make a back up, it wont work. and when I tried to make a burned copy I notices that the icon to burn it is not even hightlighted ( so I cant even click on it. This *****.

To everyone who cannot back up files after
downloading v7.3:

I removed the itunes and quicktime from my computer.
Then I went to:

http://filehippo.com/download_itunes/?2736

and download the v 7.2. Now I am able to backup all
my purchases. I received no help from apple except
telling me to call customer support for a fee. This
seems to have done the trick for me. I did not lose
any of my library either. Hope this helps some of
you.

This works perfectly!! Thank you so much for
posting it. This is what a forum should be all
about.

I did the same thing and it also works perfectly. HOWEVER, 7.3 was so intertwined in Vista Home Premium it took me longer to sort out the miss-location of the "quick start" icons, and various other screwy things than it did to delete 7.3 and reinstall 7.2! No wonder 7.3 doesn't work right on a backup. Its like an "octopus" in Windows Vista, which I absolutely hate. XP was pretty good, Vista is mucho crap! IMHO.

Thanks for posting this work around. I've posted it on several other of these backup topics that are around. This is the first time Apple Support has been a dismal failure with a technical issue. I spent a good 20 minutes on the phone and got two pitiful emails that apparently had NO idea what the problem really was. Must be the iPhone big brother stuff messing iTunes/windows etc. up!

I don't think you have to uninstall Quicktime. I simply uninstalled iTunes, rebooted, then installed 7.2.

If your copy of iTunes is not in the default folder (typically C:\Program Files\iTunes), remember where it is when installing the new one, just in case. To be honest, it looks like it totally wiped my copy, but the new install was fine. I think it keeps the settings under \Documents and Settings\username (or whatever MS calls it in various OS's).

In the future, when iTunes wants to upgrade, don't do an automatic upgrade. Download it from Apple, and save it in a separately named folder for each version (the downloads typically have the same name for all versions.) This way, you have an archive of versions you can fall back on without having to go digging through possibly hacked/virus-laden versions from 3rd party sites (I'm NOT saying there are any problems with the filehippo.com download, just a remote possibility.)

You can also manually run 'Apple Software Update' off of the Start menu and configure it to never check for updates. If you are extra paranoid, configure any program-control firewall to block it.

I also noticed, as of 7.3.1, there are now separate downloads for Win2K, and XP/Vista.

You do not have to uninstall Quick time, just version 7.3 from the add/remove program area under the control panel.

It is not a perfect solution but my computer is working perfectly now using version 7.2. Until they fix the problem, this definately works just fine. I did not lose any music or playlists. My computer is exactly as it was before I download the new version. Thanks for the tip. I now have a perfect backup of all my music.

I recently tried to backup up my songs after installing iTunes v7.3 and have run up against the same problem contained in this thread but instead of Unknown error 261, I get Unknown error 1951. The symptoms are the same, the backup routine kicks out the CD each attempt. I'd like to go back to v7.2 if I could find it. Any other sources out there for v7.2?

As a further note, since the downloads all tend to have the same name (iTunesSetup.exe), it can be hard to tell versions apart. Here is one way to figure out which is which:
Right-click the .EXE file in Explorer and choose 'Properties'.
Click on the 'Version' tab.
Look at the 'File version:' entry at the top.
The 7.2 version should say 7.2.0.34

I'm most familiar with Win2K, but XP and Vista should be similar if not identical.
