No Audio with Dock connector?

I've connected my iPhone to a Jam box I have with a dock connector and also to my car adaptor that uses a dock connector. Neither will produce audio. I can pause the music and advance to the next song, but the only sound comes from the iPhone. I thought it was supposed to be a standard iPod connector?

yup, same problem here. Can't find a single cable that will fit past the metal case on the earphone plug, so I decided to just plug my speakers into the dock that came with it. Except that the phone continues to send audio out it's own little speaker, nothing comes out the dock. I just tried it in the car with my belkin charging/line out iPod adaptor and while it does charge from it, no audio comes out.

This seems to be a common enough problem that I hope it will get fixed... It doesn't seem to know it's in the dock. My iPod always made a little beeping sound when you docked it, this one only does if you have the USB connection also plugged in.

This is disappointing. I've got a car dock made by Volvo that's always worked well with my iPods, and I never imagined that it wouldn't work just as well with the iPhone. It's an incredibly simple solution -- it just splits the feed from the dock connector into power and audio out, just like the iPhone dock does. I can't imagine that this problem really requires me to install a new dock in my car -- I hope Apple can fix this with a software update.

Reading around on the internet and here this is not a rare problem, but many people dont seem to be having it, so our iPhones are either defective, or need some kind of software jumpstart. I've been playing with mine all day and just can't get anything to come out of the line out at all.

There is something about plugging a non-iPhone known device for playback and it is supposed to offer to turn off the phone to stop you hearing the rf noise through the speakers (while I could not hear any audio, I COULD hear the noise of it through my car stereo) so perhaps this mechanism is just confused and not letting anything happen. I dont know, but I think that if nobody has sorted it out by monday I will be making a call to apple support about it. It's definitely not working right, and it's not just with 3rd party hardware, but with it's own dock. So it's not the other stuff that is all broken, it's the phone.

I did a hard reset to my phone and it works now IF you say yes to the "switch to Airplane" message. Of course then you can't receive any calls.
While it was playing, I turned the airplane setting back off and tried calling my phone. The noise that came out of the speakers was excruciating and sent the cats running. I guess I'll be keeping my Nano to listen to podcasts on the way to work. I need to be available by phone during that time.

Yeah I am having the same problem with my iPhone. I have Alpine CDA9857 with a Full Speed connector. I plugged it into the car today for the first time and it asked it I wanted to switch to airplane mode. I said no.

I'll have to try the solution of turning it to airplane mode tomorrow. I'm just a little disappointed that this could all boil down to getting a new Full Speed connector.

I just hope I don't have to buy a new head unit.

Yeah, this BS! The apple website even says the iPhone should (or may) work with most iPOd accessories... however I tried about 10 iPod accessories for audio and NONE of them WORK. I took an old pair of headphone and used a box knife to trim off the platic covering around the jack and was able to get it plugged in to my iPhone, BUT STILL NOT AUDIO out... the iPhone external speaker shuts off like I have plugged in headphones, but nothing.

ALSO... the dock that came with my iPhone, while the audio out jack does work, the speakers I have the iPhone plugged into (viua the included dock) make a terrible noice from the wireless signals!!!! Did Apple test this thing????? So far I am agree with the person who say this is a part-time phone, part-time iPod... WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT???

I also am having problems using the ipod feature on the iphone to play my music on my sony head dash unit that supports previous ipod (i also have ipod nano). I have a cord that i plug in to the iphone and it plugs into my head unit. With the ipod it works fine, but with the iphone i get no audio at all thru the car stereo. I'm starting to think that the iphone can't play music thru the car stereo.
I'm sure other people are having this problem. I was hoping to sell my ipod nano and just rely on the iphone.....any one have a fix, do i need a different cable exclusively for the iphone to connect and play music thru my audio faceplate on my car???

just the reset didn't make any difference, but I did get a few seconds of audio through my speakers plugged into the dock while I was messing with it now. Worked for about half a second, then again later on I got it to do that again. It sure sounded like a short or a bad connection to me.

So I'm now convinced that the dock connector is actually defective. Unless applecare has something else to tell me tomorrow when I call them this phone is going to go back for them to work on.

question for folks who's docks are working. Does it work like an iPod like when you life the phone from the dock the iPod goes to pause? My ipod does that when I disconnect it from the car. But the phone does not do that when I lift it from the dock while playing. If it's supposed to do that then it doesn't know that it's been lifted out of the dock, or that it was placed in the dock in the first place and that would be the problem then...

These are the woes of being an early adopter. Just because the plug is the same doesnt mean it will work with all the iPod accessories. Those accessories were designed prior to the iPhone and the iPhone is a different beast than the iPod. Give it time, all the accessories that your heart desires will come to market. There are FM modulators in the works. There is nothing "broken" with the iPhone so I am not sure what you are expecting them to fix. Here is what Apple says about iPod accessories.

Can I use iPod accessories with my new iPhone?
iPhone has the same 30-pin dock connector as the iPod, so many properly designed accessories can be used with both iPhone and iPod. However, iPhone may cause audio interference with some iPod accessories. Products that are engineered and certified to be compatible with the iPhone will carry the “Works with iPhone” logo on their packaging. See Accessories for more information.
