It doesn't happen often, and most of the time it works fine, but I have noticed it. Maybe it's just a slow response?
When i run safari or ipod features, the phone goes into landscape automatically and doesnt seem to respond to rotating the device. is there a setting somewhere i'm missing or is my motion detector not working? anyone else have this problem?

I've noticed that when rotating the iphone to landscape mode, to view pictures, it won't always respond.

The biggest cause I've seen of this problem is people not quite understanding how accelerometers work.
The device needs to have the screen perpendicular (or close to it)to the ground in order to function properly. If you held it in your hand, flat like a pancake or something, it can't work.
How would it know what direction it was "facing"? If you stood there, then turned left, technically the iPhone has just been rotated 90 degrees. They can't have it flipping the screen all around just because you're not walking a perfectly straight line.
Accelerometers are based on gravity and can only function certain ways. The one thing they can basically assume is that gravity is generally going to be pulling you towards the earth, and that your head is up top, and your feet are down below! The device is limited by what they can logically assume about your position. Oh, and the standard rules of gravity!

ah, well, if you're holding it so the screen is perpendicular to the ground and it's not working, then yeah, i'd suggest bringing it in and having them check it out, cause it's certainly possible to have a bad one.
you seem to know alot about this...can you help me? here's my situation:
I spent all night gertting it activated, had to reset, replace, used all the troubleshooting advice...and now i can recieve calls--but not make them, but screen freezes each "second" command. Meaning the first touch works, then nothing. Must restart. Sometimes the unlock slider won't work either, must restart again. URGGGG! I've been on hold for 2 hours this morning with apple, an hour after that w/at&t--they passed the buck and won't turn the other service back on either. I bought 2 of these things--my 8GB is on its way! I'm told to get a retun code from apple, so now i'm 700 minutes on hold for that!!
any advice for me??? thanx 😟

did the stores reserve any stock for replacements do you know? They had 3 left for sale last night when I got this one. If they don't resolve this efficiently I guess I will cancel the shipment of the 8GB one 😟 thanks info gods!
i find that the screen only rotates in certain applications.
hopefully apple will change this as my html email is hard to read vertically!
the same email read in the browser is much nicer in widescreen...

hold the iPhone in a "vertical" nature and then turn it, it's how accelerometers work. if you have it flat, like it was sitting on a table, it won't work.
hmm. i've tried every angle, including vertical as you describe. it's completely unresponsive. i think the accelerometer must be faulty in this case.
Well, don't I feel slightly lame. And all sorts of dumb.
But you're right on the money, there. Works every time.
Thanks for clearing that up!

wild guess? doesn't sound like a usage issue, I'd say there's something wrong with your touch sensor.
I would return it to the store you purchased it from, and show them the issues and get them to replace it from in store stock...
