I have the same issue with Outlook 2003 and the Outlook iTunes syn add in will not stay checked. If I open up Outlook and go under tools and check the box it will stay checked until I close Outlook. This will allow me to sync.

I was on the phone for 6 hours Saturday and 3 hours on Sunday with tech support. This issue has been escalated to the senior engineers. Let's hope they fix the problem quickly.

I gave up. Could not sync Outlook 2007 after frequent calls and trying everything. I returned the iPhone reluctantly to the Apple Store. Hopefully over the next few months, these bugs will be corrected, but I can't wait. Back to my Treo. When the iPhone becomes more business friendly with calendar, contacts, memos, and to do list that sync I'll will be back.

I make progress. The reason we can not re-check the itunes addin is that we have told outlook to disable it. Help->About Microsoft Outlook, there is a button in the bottom right "Disabled Items" choose the "itunes sync addin" and enable.

The next time I did a sync via iTunes i got all my contacts and calender item pushed to my iPhone.

BUT...
Outlook also likes to crash now, alot.

It is a start though.

I have Outlook 2007 (which I upgraded from Outlook 2003 a day before I got the iPhone). Outlook 2007 synchs just fine. No problems. Not all Outlook fields synch (for example, "Business 2" and other less frequently used fields). But, overall, no problems at all synching. Now, I wish the Outlook Notes would synch with iPhone's Notes, but it does not (it's intended this way, at least for now, so it's not technically a "bug").

you can reenable in "help about" screen of Outlook - use disabled components tab. Then go to tools>option>other>advanced>com-addins to renable the two itunes items ... press ok and then it will sync again. Outlook will give same error message next time you open it though, so you'll have to go through this each time until they fix it.

I posted this on another tread as well.

I finally fixed it. For those who may have similar problems, I am reporting back. After many hours of frustration (including reading many of the forum threads)and trying to get the outlook to sync I finally stumbled across the following:

since I have had a palm pilot (for some years) I had the palm hotsync running. It starts every time I turn on the computer. It looks like a red and blue circle with some arrows in the middle.

I turned off the palm sync and the iphone sync now works...

I have a Palm also. I removed Palm Hot Sync from my start up menu. Outlook 2007 will still not sync with my iPhone. Are you using Outlook 2007?

I have tried everything that has been suggested so far, with no success.

Has anyone with Outlook 2007 been able to successfully sync their contacts with the iPhone?

Everything else syncs beautifully.

After 4 miserable days and lots of time I have finally gotten my Outlook 2007 calendar & contacts to sync with my iPhone. I don’t know which of the following is the cause or the effect but the sync problem appears to be related to the (1) Microsoft user account, (2) Microsoft Outlook mail account, (3) a Microsoft Com Add-in “Outlook iTunes Sync Addin”. When the sync was not working this add-in was either missing, not loading, causing my Outlook to crash— I experienced all three under various scenarios. I don’t know if my use of an 80 GP iPod and SLVR with iTunes and Outlook is a relevant factor; however, I suspect it may explain why some of us had problems and others did not.

This is what worked for me:
--First Step, create a new Microsoft user. I moved my old documents to either a shared folder or the new user account.
--Second step, create a new Outlook mail account for your mail. NOTE: You can add your other PST files but keep the newly created primary PST file. You can rename it but move the information from the old primary PST file to the new. When I tried to use the existing PST file for the mail account it didn’t work. Moving mail, contact, and calendar information at the data level probably isn’t necessary but as a precaution, I chose to move the data from the old PST file’s standard folders (Inbox, Sent, etc.) to the new file’s standard folders. I moved the data in my user created folders at the folder level.
---Third step, start/install iTunes. At this point I configured my iTunes, initialized my iTunes account, and finally added my music library folder—this may take a lot of time if you have a large library, use album artwork, etc.
---Fourth step, after re-established my library on the new user account, I re-established my play lists.
--Final step, I synced my iPhone, obviously as a new device I had to configure & apply the sync options. Finally I had a fully functioning iPhone!

The Apple care helpdesk helped me reach this solution- and my thanks to them. As evidenced by the assistance they provided me, I believe Apple is narrowing in on the problem & hopefully, a more appropriate solution. I think we should give Apple a break and (should) understand and expect shortcomings, bugs, and other glitches with this initial iPhone release. However, I think Apple has been remiss in failing to acknowledge the sync problems some are having with the iPhone/Outlook and they should tell us they are researching, investigating, or trying to confirm the problem. To say only “iPhone syncs with Outlook” is insulting, implies we don’t know what we’re doing, and, makes us question their compentence. It also leads to more calls to the Apple Care help desk and does not minimize the damage to the Apple image.

My IT guy just solved the sync problem for me. Although he did a lot of things in Outlook, which blew by too quickly to follow, I think the basic solution was that I have two sets of folders, both Personal, and Mailbox. When he copy/pasted my contacts from my personal folder into my mailbox contacts folder, and made the mailbox folder the primary outlook folder, iPhone synched right away. I think it's more of an issue of how Outlook is configured, than any problem with iPhone.
