Where can I download Safari 2.0.4?

Question: Where can I download the prior version of Safari for Mac (2.0.4 or 2.x)?

Background: I subscribe to a service (MLB.TV) that on my Mac only works in Safari 2.0.4.

I replaced it with the new public beta (3.x), but the site I want to use for watching mlb.tv won't work under this new version.

I should not have deleted the old version of Safari, but I figured I could always re-install. Now that I WANT to, I cannot find the download!

[The Apple Download site is useless: when I type "safari" in the downloads search it says "An error occurred. Please try your search again later."]

When you get to the downloads area type Safari in the search window, a drop down menu selection will appear, choose Safari Troubleshooting and when that page opens you will see the Safari 2.0.4 on the right side of the screen under Software Update. Hope this helps.

Hi

It's not that easy. When you installed Safari 3, core files of the operating system were changed. Installing Safari 2.0.4 won't help because the core files which were changed have not been restored. The reason Apple includes an Uninstaller in the Installation package is to allow you to go back and forth between the two versions without problem. During the uninstall/reinstall, various files are swapped.

The easiest path to restore sanity here is to reinstall the operating system. I suggest you visit an Apple store in the Los Angeles area, having someone at the Genius Bar help you with the process. Otherwise, if you are not sure how to go about a reinstall, you can possibly create a bigger problem than the one you are facing. You'll need to make an appointment in advance.

To find a store near you, go here - on the right side of the page you'll see the "store locator". Select a store. There are instructions on that page for how to make an appointment at the Genius Bar.

Good Luck.

Thanks Starman,

Regarding the "Genuises" in the Apple Stores, I will not go there for help. I've been condescended to and endured incomprehensible explanations. I was also accused of damaging the screen on my PowerBook to "trick" them into repairing it. I have found them to be impatient, unsympathetic and uncommunicative. Et cetera.

Meanwhile, thank you for the advice about the uninstall. I'll just go without Safari for now, as I only use it for that one purpose (watching MLB.TV) and otherwise get by with Firefox, Camino, and - yes - IE 5.2 (for getting mail off the Exchange Server on my Windows-based office network).

As an aside, it's incomprehensible to me that if I delete one of Apple's own apps from my Apple computer, I can't just download and install it again.

Hi

Because Safari integrates with other apps. such as Address Book and Mail, changing Safari also requires a change in the files that tie these applications together.

Sorry to hear your experience at the Apple Store has not been pleasant. Have you spoken to the Store Manager about your experience?

Regardless of whether you use Safari or not, if Safari is missing from your system, it's possible that complications can arise whenever an upgrade or Security update occurs.

I have an idea that I just thought of. I'm going to upload to a server a copy of Safari 3.0.2. Meanwhile, if you don't have the Safari 3.0.2 Installer package, download another copy from the Apple Safari site.

Post your e-mail address and I'll send you the link for the download. It will be in Zip form. When you download the application, double click to unzip it. Then move it to your Applications folder. Next run the Safari Uninstaller in the Installer package to revert to Safari 2.0.4.

When you list your e-mail, use "at" for the @ sign, and "dot" for .

Thanks for all the help.

FYI: I don't use Address Book or Mail. I use Thunderbird.

I spoke to the store manager when I asked whether the white spot that spontaneously appeared on my screen would be eligible for repair under AppleCare, as it was a known defect (discussed in these forums quite a bit!), and he is the one who said it was something I had "obviously" done, by hitting to poking the display. He was no help.

Re: Safari. I ran the Uninstall pkg from the 3.0.2 installer already, FYI. It won't "revert" to the 2.x, I don't think, because I don't have that version on my system.

However, if there's still something you think I should do, please go ahead with your ideas. At this point my ideal would be to have either a 2.x version of Safari or (second choice) a 3.x version. Right now I have none.

Email is shaindlin at mac dot com.

Thanks for helping.

Hi Shaindlin

E-mail sent with the link for Safari 3.0.2

After downloading, double-click the file to unzip it. This will create Safari.app. Move that file into your application folder.

Then, go to the Installer Package for the Beta and run the Uninstaller again. Hopefully, this creates Safari 2.0.4 when complete (you'll be instructed to "restart your computer". Do not use your computer during the uninstall.

Starman,

Thanks for the followup! When I went to drag your unzipped Safari.app (3.x) into my Applications folder, I discovered that 2.0.4 was there again. It works as it did before, and the Media Player at MLB.TV works as desired again.

So my problem is fully resolved.

I assume this happened when I ran the 3.x Uninstaller last night (based on the "last modified" date on the 2.x version). It did not tell me that 2.x had been restored, I only knew that might happen from re-reading your previous posting (thank you).

And of course, I discovered it when I went to drag the 3.x version to the Applications folder.

Thank you again!!

Im so glad that there seems to be a fix for what I've also been experiencing.

I installed the Beta version of Safari 3 on my otherwise very hard working good running MacBook and ever since I have had nothing but problems connecting to the internet wirelessly which is almost the only way I connect.

I was wondering if you would make that zip file available in a liknked form or forward it me seeing as it seems to have worked for Shaindlin and as Im on vacation and have no access to my restore disks Im ready to try anything.

My e-mail is kairiecken at mac dot com

Thanks,
Kai

I've had very good experiences with Apple's phone support. You might try calling instead of going to your local Apple Store. And the phone support personnel can arrange a repair for a laptop (within the U.S.), with the laptop picked up by a shipper at your door and dropped back off at your door after it's repaired.
