iPhone Tips & Tricks

How about a thread on little things that might help out using the iPhone that may not be obvious.

I know I really like being able to delete email by just swiping left to right on the email in the list and up pops a delete key on the right. that way i don't have to open the email to actually delete it.

15" 2.4ghz MacBook Pro C2D, 4gb RAM, 23" ACD, Mac OS X (10.4.10), iPhone 8gb

Ok that one is good. i'm always scrolling all the way back to the top to get to the address bar again.

I love the David Pogue posted tip about the ".123" keys.

If you want to use a period, or any other key on the "other" keyboard while you're typing just press and hold the ".123" key and without letting your finger off move it to the key you want, for example, the period. after you let go the period will be there and you will be back to the "ABC" keyboard. great time/click saver

In Safari, one finger double click zooms in, one finger double click zooms out. In Google Maps, one finger double click zooms in, 2 finger SINGLE click zooms out.

No clue why these are different.

2 easy ones but it took me a while to figure them out, so there you go:
favorite: to organize the favorite contacts in the order you like, tap Edit in the top left corner and then drag the 3 stacked up bars on the right the name to move the contact around.

Contacts: you can choose to sort the contact list by first names or last names. Just go to settings/Phone/Contacts/Sort

Every try to play music for a friend over the phone by holding your phone up to a speaker? (Admit it, you know you have).

Well, if you're talking to someone with the iPhone's speakerphone, and you go to the iPod, you can play the music from the iPhone's external speaker and the listener will hear it.

Not sure if this is a really useful feature, but it's interesting...

Just a minor point. Swiping an email to delete works from right to left as well. I am left handed and was having trouble with the message actually opening when I swiped from left to right. So I tried swiping with my left thumb from right to left. Works like a charm and feels more natural for me.

This is some what funny but is useful to some:
Use the sleeping iPhone black screen as a good sized mirror. Use the Apple logo on the back as a very clear close mirror. Use the camera to photograph yourself then pinch zoom to see very close.

Outstanding thread! I've already put to use each of these and was SO happy to see the one about period/numeric keypad quickswitch.

Keep it going. I'm sure there are more that we are each discovering as we go along. Apple's engineers have clearly thought out how to use this fantastic iPhone. It was well worth the wait.

To original question, it's faster to open an e-mail then use the 'trash can' icon at bottom of screen. Can continue through all e-mails.

When typing with the virtual keyboard, the characters are “punched out” only when you take off your finger. So if you punched the wrong letter, without lifting your finger drag it to the correct letter (usually the neighboring one) and then lift. By doing so you don't have to delete the wrong entered letter before you type in the right one.

If you want all your contacts organised by persons, companies, places, relatives, coworkers... (you name it)... you create such groups in the Address Book and then when syncing, you select those groups and not the whole list of your contacts.
