Volume on Voice calls is horrible

When using the iPhone headset OR the speaker while on a voice call, the volume is very very quiet. Anyone else experiencing this? If I use the iPod or YouTube, the volume is adequate at its highest setting. So clearly the speaker is capable of getting louder, why is it so muted for voice calls?

Having same trouble - volume is absurdly quiet when volume is raised to its highest level, both when using the handset and the speaker phone. Basically can't use the phone when driving on the highway given background noise of my car (VW Passat - not that loud). My ear is sore from pressing it into the sharp edge of the leather case. Situation is no different when the leather case is off and the phone is crammed into my ear. Have tried the suggestion to lock and unlock the max volume, and set at its highest level, and there was no change in max volume.

Perhaps most of the (apparently very few) field testers used a headset in order to help hide the device from others... and thus never noticed the volume problem.
