iPhone and 2007 MINI Cooper

I tested my iPhone this weekend with my 2007 MINI Cooper. The MINI is equipped with a Bluetooth phone preparation, Navigation system and iPod harness. The results were:

- Bluetooth phone preparation - The iPhone paired just fine with the new system.

- Navigation system - This system actually integrates communication and entertainment as well. Voice commands and dialing functions worked correctly with the iPhone.

- iPod harness - This was a bust. The iPhone displays a message that the adapter is not compatible and gives you an option to turn off the phone. When I turned the phone function off the iPhone showed up under the CD menu just like my regular iPod. When I left the phone function on, the iPhone did not show up in the entertainment menu. After I unplugged it from the adapter it started kicking out to the desktop whenever I opened an application. I had to give it a soft reset to get it back to normal. This may only be a temporary issue. The dealer had to reprogram the computer to work with the adapter when I purchased it so maybe another update will released that will add iPhone compatibility.

To sum up, the iPhone currently works with Bluetooth and the Nav Computer on the 2007 MINI Cooper but not with the iPod adapter. You'll want to keep an older iPod handy for use in the car and use the iPhone for walking-around music.

There is a discussion there under 2nd Generation Minis >> Audio & Navigation. It's pretty much the same as here, with an extra dose of cynicism. 😉

Call MINI USA customer relations (number in thread above) and complain, because they will not come out and say whether they will issue an upgrade for early 2007 minis. >:-<

I had this issue with my 07 MCS JCW that I took delivery on just a couple days ago. When I tested the connection before I placed my order it worked fine. It was frustrating.

However, I updated my iPhone to 1.1.1 last night and re-paired my phone just a few minutes ago and my address book now works. I'll update again if anything changes but for now all is right in the MINI bluetooth/iPhone world.

Keep in mind that 1.1.1 update has taken a long time for some and a short time for others. My iPhone crashed and needed to be restored from scratch and it took about 3 hours. Some have even had to take their phone to get replaced.

I just updated my iPhone to 1.1.1, deleted and re-paired the phone with the Mini and the address book works perfectly! Now I'm wondering if this wasn't, in fact, 'broken' by Mini, but was broken by, say, the iPhone 1.0.2 update? And will it break again with the next update? We're at the mercy of Apple and BMW, and both parties are silent on the subject.

Just for reference, I'm still using the iPhone 1.0.2 update without any problems. My MINI was an April '07 build picked up in May '07. I've not had any problems with the address book (knock on wood). Maybe a nav system version in the mid-summer models may be to blame?

The only issue I've had with the nav system was with my iPod harness installation. The harness was new for '07 and I purchased it early enough that the related nav system code had not been released yet. I had to take it back twice. The first time they got the iPod harness working but it knocked out the voice command functionality. The second time got everything up and running correctly.

My biggest concern now is whether the upgrade code for the JCW Stage I kit is going to screw up my great track record.

Currently have iPhone 1.1.1, Mini build week 34 picked up 9/22/07.

iPhone addy book did not transfer with previous iPhone version.

After update addy transfers and voice dialing does work, you must test it out saying them at slower speeds and volumes to get it to recognize who your looking for. Dial "Name" is one of the commands
