I bought a DVI-HDMI cable to hook up my Macbook on my LCD TV, but the TV displays no image and the notebook doesn't detect another monitor. The DVI end of the cable is DVI-D single link. Does anyone think this is the problem? Is there anything I have to teak on the notebook?
The cable being single link is certainly not the problem - if you connect a single link display (like 20" or 23" Cinema Displays) they do work as well.
Some HD(ready) TVs do have HDMI ports that do not have DVI compatibility. Check the manual. Of course, there is also a chance that either the cable or the DVI port on the MBP is defective. Do other external monitors work?
There have been reports that even if the TV is not supporting DVI through the HDMI port, routing the signal through a device with a true HDMI out can work, so if you have any kind of receiver or console with HDMI in and out - this might be worth a try. If it does, you might have to deal with slight resolution problems, as the MBP will not be able to detect such devices as displays, might be required to set resolution and underscan settings manually (you can use a tool such as

1) the DVi port is ok, since I use a DVI-VGA cable and it works fine
2) the TV is DVI-HDMI compatible, as it says on the manual
3) the cable might be defective.... I need to try it somewhere else
Here's a list of resolution supported by the TV, and the refresh rate Hz:
IBM
640 X 480 31,469
720 X 400 31,469
VESA
640 X 480 37,861
640 X 480 37,500
800 X 600 37,879
800 X 600 48,077
800 X 600 46,875
1024 X 768 48,364
1024 X 768 56,476
1024 X 768 60,023
1360 X 768 47,712
HDMI has some compatibility issues since it has an incomplete specification. Some HDMI interfaces may not support DVI's automatic detection of monitors...check and see if your adapter supports DDC (if it doesn't, that may be the problem). Because HDMI is so problematic, I think it is most likely an incompatible adapter. But of course, exhaust all your options before buying another one...
The MBP would support the 1360x768 resolution just fine (mine does on a Sony Bravia LCD TV). I still somehow suspect the cable to be the source of the error.
Does the TV have alternate inputs (DVI or VGA)? If everything else fails, the 1360x768 resolution should work fine on a VGA connection (full HD 1920x1280 can be an issue) - if the cable is not too long the quality difference is very minor.
Another question: Did you successfully connect anything to the HDMI port of the TV yet (DVD player or so)?
I've used a VGA cable with the DVI-VGA adapter that came with the MBP and had no problems. I'm plannig n ow on using a DVI-HDMI adapter with a HDMI-HDMI cable, hoping that this might work. I'm sending the DVI-HDMI cable back for tests, since I couldn't test it anywhre else here. If the cable is defective they'll send me a new one.
