iPhone not working with car iPod connection

I’ve got a fairly high end car audio setup. In the trunk I have a CleanSweep unit from JL Audio. It has an aux connection from which we’ve run a cable with an iPod connector so I can play my iPod through the system. Doesn’t allow for control of the iPod through the headunit, but it works.

But not with the iPhone. Interestingly, the plug works and the iPhone recognizes it’s been plugged in as it now charges off the cable, but it still plays out the iPhone’s speaker.

Anyone have any clue what the issue might be?

I went to the Apple Store and they told me that there wasn't a cord that would allow me to play my music from my iPhone to my car stereo.

So...

I bought an iPod because I wanted my music in my car.

I also bought this Kensington Digital FM Transmitter/Auto Charger for my iPod as well. I found a radio station and it worked perfectly.

I thought to myself, why not try to hook my iPhone up to that cable and see if it worked.

Well it did and so I took my iPod back and now am able to use my iPhone in my car using the Kensington cord!!

Here is the link to that cord:

It just goes into your cigarette lighter and then you set a radio station on the cord and then tune onto the radio station on your car.

Hope that helps,
Sam

P.S.- Your iPhone is going to tell you that the product is not compatible with the iPhone and would like to know if you want to put it into airplane mode.

Well just select "NO" and then your phone will work like normal and play your music through your speakers and it will still be able to receive calls while listening to your music, the music will just fade out while you are driving and allow you to answer your call and then once you are done, continue playing your song right where it left off.

Here's my findings... I've installed iPod connections to head units in four cars over the past year. iPod gets charged and plays audio just fine. Before the update, iPhone would be charged but not send audio to the system. After the update, the iPhone plays audio through one system. So, it must be software fixable, but still hardware dependent.

The PT cruiser's stock stereo is the one that works. Two Pioneer systems don't work. Toyota Sequoia premium system does not work. Can't remember the brands of cables and connectors I used. I'll look for that and add it.

I really don't want to use a headphone cable or FM transmitter.

I've tried the dock connection from my iPhone as well. But this will not work. You must use the headphone jack to output your audio. Since this jack is recessed you will need 1 of 2 things. Both are simple, although the 2nd will require the removal of your radio. If u don't know how to do this have someone else that does to take it out.

1. If you have a radio with an "Input" jack on the front that looks like a headphone jack you can just buy a cord that will go in your iPhone's headphone jack and your radio's input jack. The Apple store sells a cord like this by Belkin for $20. It has 2 ends that look like the plugs on headphones, both slim enough to go into the recessed headphone jack of the iPhone.

2. If you DON'T have the input jack on the front of your radio then you shoud at least have auxillary inputs on the rear of you radio. These look similar to those on your TV. There is a cord you could can buy with audio connections on 1 end and a headphone connection one the other. These come with most portable DVD players but are sold seperately at a place like Radio Shack. Besides that you will also need a slim adapter to plug the headphone jack end into the recessed headphone jack of your iPhone. The Apple store sells this piece by Belkin for $10.

So in short you will make 2 connections to the rear of you radio's audio inputs(1 left 1 right). Then the other end(the heaphone end) will connect to the Belkin piece. Then the Belkin piece will fit into your iPhone's recessed headphone jack.

Hope that works for you.

I have an aux iPod2Car from Peripheral Electronics and it works well with the iPhone in Airplane Mode. I've been using it in my 05 Scion xA for 2+ years. With the iPhone it automatically switches in and out of Airplane mode when connected and disconnected. You can use the radio or iPhone to control.
