What color to paint my home editing room?

Hi -

Slightly off topic, but I'm looking for advice on what color to paint the walls of my home editing suite. I finally have a room to dedicate to my editing and am about to embark on the editing of an indie feature film. I will be having directors and producers by occasionally, so want to make the room professional and intimate.

As it stands now, the room is a pale yellow/white and is way too bright and boring. So I'm thinking a darker grey, or maybe a brown or perhaps a dark red/brown color, a bit more dramatic. I'm hoping you folks can warn me away from taking the wrong path and put me on the right path.

There are a lot of conflicting ideas about edit room wall coloring. Personally, gray walls would make me feel like a prisoner, not an editor. My edit room has a bay window with fairly heavy curtains on it, and another widow that looks out over the water with a very sheer curtain. The room itself is a very pale yellow with a white ceiling.

It's bright and cheerful. Clients like it. I like it. I DO tend to close the big curtains when color correcting.

Personally, I'd pay more attention to making yourself and the occasional visitor comfy. And if possible a client station with a laptop to keep them amused while you're working on something tricky. Of course, with a feature cut it's timing not graphics you've gotta worry about.

If you're starting from scratch, spend some time focusing on the lighting of the room as well. Reflected light or side lamps can be more relaxing on the eyes than overhead lighting during hours of staring at the monitors.

The concept of grey/dark colored walls was to maintain the best environment for viewing and matching colors. Bright or deep colors behind a monitor can cause slight shifts to the eye, and what you might think is white on that display won't appear white on another. If this isn't critical for you, then create a relaxing environment with whatever paint you choose.

Not quite on subject, but don't forget the sound! Have some soft furnishing and sound absorbing treatment to improve the sound monitoring environment.

I have spent many years working in studio control end edit rooms where darkness is the norm, but for my own use I find that a lighter environment is more comfortable, especially for the clients; these days the high brightness, large lcd displays will impress the client in such a room.
