How do I configure imap for AKO? (Army Knowledge Online)

I need to configure Mail to get my AKO (Army Knowledge Online) email via imap. I had it working via POP, but just got a message that they (AKO) are discontinuing POP service soon, and that I had to switch to imap. The instructions on the AKO site only give details for MS Outlook - no Mac help available.

Has anyone successfully done this - got imap to work?? And if so, how did you do it?

Thanks!

Rocky

In the M$ Outlook instructions, do they tell you what to use for the host name of the imap server? Do they tell you what to use for the imap port number? If they don't tell you whether to use SSL or not, if you used it before, I would continue to do so. Imap with SSL on standard configurations is port 993, no SSL uses port 143.

Did they make any changes to the smtp settings? If not, that will stay the same in your new account setup.

In Mail.app, go to Preferences, click on Accounts icon, and click on plus sign at lower left of window to add a new imap account. Answer the account setup wizard's questions with the information that they provided to you (reusing your POP's SMTP info that you already have, if they didn't tell you anything different).

Once it is working as a new account, drag&drop all the messages from the old AKO POP account into the AKO IMAP account. (You know about the gray triangle next to Inbox, right? Click on it and breaks out your accounts into separate entities.) Verify that your dragged&dropped messages are really there in the new imap account, then you can delete the POP account configuration (but I stress - make darned sure your old messages are indeed copied over into your new imap account because when you delete the POP account configuration from Mail Preferences, those messages are gone permanently; they are not recoverable!!!!)

If you have any additional questions or need additional help, perhaps you could post the information that they sent you (masking any personal info, of course) here?

Thanks for the assist. I used the Outlook 2003 instructions on the AKO Help site and the info from your post and it's working great. Was a little frustrating since I couldn't get to the advanced settings until the account was fully created (advanced settings required to change the ports).

As I was setting it up, Mail would try to connect to the AKO server first for the "Incoming Mail" and then for the "Outgoing Mail." Both times I just had to be patient and let it time out with an error message that it couldn't connect.

Once the account was created, I was able to go back to it in the preferences menu and adjust the ports - need to go with 465 for the Outgoing (SMTP) port and 993 for the Incoming (IMAP) port.

Once these were set, all that was left to do was add the password info to the keychain when prompted -- all works well.

Thanks again!

Rocky
