Internet filtering for iPhone?

The iPhone is incredible, but one thing that is keeping me from buying one is lack of any kind of internet filtering to keep out **** and other bad stuff. I've got filters on all my computers, and would love one for the iPhone as well.

So far I have contacted two filtering companies (Intego and Covenant Eyes), and neither has anything for the iPhone. I'm told AT&T offers some optional filtering on the Edge network (via the Parental Controls which you access by logging into their website), but I have no idea how good it is, and the AT&T sales rep told me you can't edit or customize it, i.e. you can't block a specific site for example. Also, I would assume the Parental Controls would be disabled whenever the phone jumps to wi-fi.

Has anyone heard if there are any such 3rd party apps in development? Thank

Regarding the "proxy" method. I use to use Hedgebuilders with my PC. It was a proxy site. Will this work?

On my Treo Palm phone, I never found a filter for the browser. However, I found a solution that was adequate for my need. It is an application called SecureApp that you can use to require a password to use any application of you designation. So, in order to start the browser in in the phone, you have to enter a password. Is there and application like this for iphone?
Thanks
Marc

I doubt that any solution to either filter or disable safari (and youtube, for that matter ((yes, there is illegal stuff on youtube))) will come until Apple releases the SDK for iPhone and iPod touch in February. I myself am wondering why they never did this in the initial release, as it does seem to scare many parents away from buying the iPhone for their children.

Regarding the iPod touch, though, you can still filter web access through your router or other access point, just like you would for a company proxy or a packet sniffer.

*My initial contact with Covenant Eyes:*

Hello,

I currently am using Covenant Eyes on the computer I use at my company. With the advent of the Blackberry and the iPhone, I am considering purchasing an iPhone or Blackberry but would really appreciate a type of monitoring software for it.

I was wondering if Covenant Eyes provided any sort of monitoring software for the iPhone. If Covenant Eyes does not provide this service, would anyone at the company know of another company who does provide the service?

Thank you.

Peter

*Their reply:*

Thanks for your note. Cell phones, PDA's, and other hand-held devices
are growing in use and Covenant Eyes does indeed plan to keep up with
this technology. We have only begun research on this, and do not yet
even have a timetable for development, because each of these has its own
protocol and will require extensive modification to our program.

We plan to tackle this issue on two fronts. First of all, we hope to
have programs that can actually be installed on the hand-held device.
Second, we hope to identify and record applications that are used - such
as the programs necessary to download to a PC from the hand-held device.
Again, we appreciate your desire to maintain integrity on the internet
through Covenant Eyes.
Sincerely,

Keith Rose

Thank you for the reply and very helpful information.

I am looking forward to what Covenant Eyes comes up with.

Hope it is soon.
