The same thing happened to me as well, except the superdrive firmware update 2.1 says it didn't find any hardware to update. I've rebooted three times, including once into Safe Boot mode. No luck. Apple System Profiler under Disc Burning says "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly" so it can't find my superdrive either. The keyboard eject button doesn't work, and the eject button in iTunes doesn't eject the blank CD I put in. HELP!

If what i've been reading on other posts about this topic is correct, some people were able to correctly install the superdrive firmware update 2.1 and some weren't (myself included). I'm wondering if the issue is connected to the nearly simultaneous installation of the Audio Update 2007-001 (1.0) on 7/4 coupled with multiple automatic attempts (6/28, 6/30, & 7/4) to install the SuperDrive Firmware Update (2.1). I've copied part of the software update log from my MBP's System Profiler:

2007-06-20 20:31:15 -0500: Installed "Mac OS X Update (Intel)" (10.4.10)
2007-06-24 11:39:15 -0500: Installed "Safari 3 Beta Update" (3.0.2)
2007-06-28 22:32:29 -0500: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
2007-06-30 22:51:53 -0500: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
2007-06-30 22:53:08 -0500: Installed "iTunes" (7.3)
2007-07-04 05:51:05 -0500: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
2007-07-04 05:51:07 -0500: Installed "Audio Update 2007-001" (1.0)

The issue I've read on other forum posts ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1015028&tstart=0) concerns restarting the computer (which is what I'm guessing the Audio Update 2007-001 (1.0) before the SuperDrive Firmware Update (2.1) was finished installing. If this was the case (keep in mind, I'm speculating) then when my MBP restarted yesterday the firmware for the superdrive was corrupted by a partial installation and that is why iTunes and System Profiler were unable to find it. This premise could only be true if my MBP hadn't restarted since 6/30 as the log shows. I'm still looking into this.

My question now is this: is there a way to rewrite the SuperDrive's firmware without replacing the superdrive, as other posts ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1013920&tstart=0) have sadly concluded?

my problem is slightly different. i have the same error sayin that there is nothin to update. i "hid" the Updater from the Login Items section of System Preferences/Accounts (which stopped it from running each time i reboot). however, now my MacBook Pro will not sleep. If i try to close the lid, the computer keeps whirring up the Superdrive in some endless loop until the battery dies (and the laptop gets extremely hot in the process). if i try to put it to sleep manually (using the Apple Menu Item), the screen goes blank for a second, and then "re-awakes", even though i'm not touching the computer. now the computer will not sleep no matter what i do. someone at Apple must help! at least let us uninstall this update!!

My profile also claims the following:
MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857:

Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857
Revision: 0009
Serial Number:
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Low Power Polling: No

Finally - Immediately post update of Audio update,

my Superdrive stopped working - still recognized in Profile, but unusable.

In my case, I DO have a reboot on Jul 1 (after the first install of firmware update)

Update process was smooth for me...no interuptions or too-early reboots...yet this MBP's Superdrive is utterly unresponsive.

It's the first time in twenty-whatever years--for me at least--that an Apple update has just up and disabled hardware; made it cold stone dead. And at this point, with all the forum monitoring etc, it does seem odd that there's been absolutely no response from Apple. You'd think: we're aware, or something, at the least.

Maybe it's the iPhone flurry (can't use one where I live) or no longer being a computer company at core, like the branding rev suggests, whatever. But disregard is particularly corrosive to loyalty.

Frankly, I'm kind of hoping that Apple will "unbundle" OSX from it's hardware. I like my MBP a lot, but it seems that there are a TON of people who are having hardware or firmware problems (not software). And my Superdrive has never worked right.

OSX is a fantastic OS and apple applications are excellent. I wish I could run it well on other hardware (that would be a heck of lot cheaper and much much more reliable). The long, long silence from Apple on this issue is unbelievable. That silence speaks volumes about their customer focus...

Apple seems unwilling or unable to support their computer hardware. Perhaps they should start working on making OSX run well on a Dell laptop (a company who DOES seem to support their hardware quite well).

Mine shows up like this:

MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857:

Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857
Revision: HAEA
Serial Number:
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Low Power Polling: Yes

Every time I reboot, the SuperDrive Update 2.1 runs and tells me there's nothing to update.

I presume your Revision is newer than mine, since it's later in the alphabet. Should I be concerned, or should I disable the updater on startup?

When I got 10.4.10, I did walk away and let it reboot along the way.
