I have the same problem. All of sudden the SuperDrive does not "grab" CD's nor DVD's when they are inserted.

I did the firmware update as shown by my log below, and my system did not attempt multiple installs.

2007-06-25 05:57:43 -0700: Installed "Security Update 2007-006 (Universal)" (1.0)
2007-06-25 06:04:14 -0700: Installed "Mac OS X Update (Intel)" (10.4.10)
2007-07-02 07:28:28 -0700: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
2007-07-02 07:29:05 -0700: Installed "iTunes" (7.3)

Hopefully, Apple will send us a fix the same way they sent us the problem. Anyone from Apple listening!!???

Same problem here, my Superdrive has gone completely "dead"/ non responding. System profile shows, that the firmware update has occured twice (using Software Update):

2007-06-29 05:56:28 +0200: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
2007-06-29 20:43:43 +0200: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
2007-06-29 20:44:13 +0200: Installed "iTunes" (7.3)

System Profiler finds the drive:

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857:

Firmware Revision: 0009
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RAM, -RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No

But it is totally silent.

Come on Apple!!!!!

Add my name to the people who are having at least some problems with the superdrive 2.1 firmware update. The update seemed to go smoothly, except after rebooting it re-ran the update and announced the by-now-familiar, "No devices were found that require this firmware update." Each time I have started up my computer since then, the update runs and announces the same thing. Luckily, though, my superdrive seems to be working ok (at least I just burned an itunes CD successfully).

Software update just found and downloaded the audio update for os x 10.4.10, but on reboot following that installation the superdrive update unfortunately ran again.

For what it's worth, here is my ata bus profile:

yes, i have the same problem. my mac no longer automatically imports new CD's when i put them in the drive. the drive does work when i do it manually, so mine is not "dead." but the computer still does not sleep. also, i did run the SuperDrive update without interruption as advised by the message. apple really needs to do something here.

Perhaps they should start working
on making OSX run well on a Dell laptop (a company
who DOES seem to support their hardware quite well).

Sorry, but I'm not ready to write off or even compare Apple to Dell. Apple service has been great. Perhaps you need to call Apple (800SOSAPPL) and have a Dell user call them to compare what is going on.

I think Apple is a great hardware company and software company. It sounds like a glitch has occured in the drive updaters and/or interference with other updates performed.

Talking to support is what they're there for. And it seems to me that when called on it, they are more than willing to escalate an issue past people that just answer calls and go by the 'script'. That's just one users opinion, I could be wrong.

Don't count Apple out because they have hit products. This has been a long time coming (I know, having been a Mac user from the bad ol' early days), it's a challenge being out front now, but a pleasant change for Apple, I'd bet, with two hit products.

OK, wait for it.... Apple's collective sigh. Now let's get back to work.

I was at the genius bar for another reason and mentioned that I had downloaded the audio and superdrive updates, installed the audio without issue but the superdrive indicated no drive for the update. The response was "the software update provides all the potential updates that MAY be required for your Mac. Once you download the update, a determination is made as to whether or not the update applies to your specific hardware config." Apparently those of us that the update didn't "match drives" for, don't have the model of superdrive for which the update was intended.

Made sense to me.

Add me to the list of CD drive problems. I tried burning a cd of my niece's soccer pictures and it didn't recognize the same media I've used since I got my MBP 15". Not good... I was sitting in front of the whole family with my Mac telling them it would just take a couple of minutes. BUZZ! Wrong~ but thanks for playing!!! And then the "looks" started from the family...

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D:

Firmware Revision: KCVB
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)

DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

And it seems the firmware update installed itself 4 times according to the software update log:

2007-06-27 17:34:56 -0700: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)
2007-06-28 20:31:17 -0700: Installed "SuperDrive Firmware Update" (2.1)

I'm a Field Engineer for a networking company. Our customers expect a high level of support when they buy our equipment. I'm no different when I pay a premium for something.

My expectations of Apple:

Answer the questions posed here regarding the firmware problem with the super drives. Create and distribute a fix, as fast as practical pre-testing of the fix will allow.

Thank you.

I have the same problem. I swapped away from a Windows PC to avoid this kind if rubbish! As I am new to Apple Mac I don't know how the other people got all those tech details. I looked in the About this Mac and Hardware but no drive is listed...?? Or where the up-dates are logged? I desperately need to burn a DVD for my client. I feel totally let down by Apple. Is my only option to go and buy an external DVD burner?

My MBP is doing the same exact thing, except for the fact that two of my peripherals are also no longer working! I currently have a 320 GB external hard drive connected via USB, a Mackie Onyx Sattelite Firewire recording interface, and a wireless printer running off of it. After the recent updates, the harddrive works fine, but the recording interface no longer shows up as an audio input, and the printer no longer prints. Both are visible as connected peripherals in system profiler, but neither are working... any ideas?

My one has got the same problem:

Drive is totally dead.

Modell: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857
Version: 0009
Seriennummer:
Absteckbares Laufwerk: Nein
Protokoll: ATAPI
Einheiten-Nummer: 0
Socket-Typ: Intern
Los Power Polling: Nein

After trying several things allready mentioned in this forum I called the Apple support hotline with the following result:

Your MBP is out of Warranty (that is correct, it is 13 months old and I didn't expect that it will die this early, because all my previos notebooks didn't)

Go to the next service point and get it replaced (Why, the system is still seing the drive and reflashing with the rigth firmware should solve the problem)

It is your risk, if you use firmware upgrades (Thank you very much, does that mean that I have to build on the actual status during system delivery and never use upgrades again? God, I spent more than $5000 during the last year because I was that happy with Apple products. Now it is like a shocking wakeup: No, never ever do it again, refrain from Apple notebooks, TVs, phones and everything else)

Hopefully this will not be the case, I am pretty sure Apple will comeup with a solution, right? There are many people using this special logo stuff, and there was reason in the past to do that. Would somebody put that on risk? Again, I guess NO, and meanwhile hope that I can work the next days without being urged to burn something or read a CD/DVD till a fix will be available!

my boss's MBP had the similar problem. DVD loads fine, but CDR doesn't read or burn.

called Apple Support. here's the solution that helped the CDR read/burn now:

trash the user's preferences (preferably in a diff account).

it's strange, but there's some preference file that's making the Superdrive act finicky.

now, remember to backup the preference folder, cuz there're lotsa important info you may need, e.g., Mail, etc.

hope that helps. and big thumbs down to Apple for this faulty firmware.
