iPhone to aux in car stereo

I want to hook my iPhone to my 2004 F-150 with a 6 disc CD changer. My stereo has an "aux" button so I'm assuming I have an aux input to work with, although I don't know exactly where it is. I would prefer to use it instead of a FM transmitter.

I have called the local stores (Best Buy, Mobile Audio, etc.) but nobody was willing to help me since the iPhone is so new. One store said they would try installing it for me if I were to provide the necessary equipment. My question is, what exactly do I need to bring them?

I want to be able to use the iPhone controls for everything. I'm not interested in Bluetooth. I have purchased the car charger from the Apple store and don't mind unplugging the iPhone if a call comes in.

If I have the Belkin iPhone adapter, can I use all of the available iPod options to plug into my aux input? Aside from the Belkin adapter, do I need to bring them anything else specific to the iPhone?

You will not be able to find a dealer that will guarantee iPhone control through your stereo. It's simply too new.

Your best bet would be to check if your aux input is a minijack. Then you could simply buy a cheap minijack to minijack cable and you're set.

If you stereo has a connection on the back for an aux device, I am now aware of any 3rd party solutions that will allow you to control your phone through the stereo at this time, nor have I heard of any coming out soon.

Thanks for the quick reply! I have been digging through the internet and have found that the back of my stereo is not a minijack. It seems as if I will need an additional adapter(FRD04-AUX).

As I said earlier, I'm not interested in any 3rd party applications to control the iPhone. So, I am going to try the Belkin adapter + FRD04-AUX adapter and control the iPhone manually. Thank you for your help!

I tried using the iphone today in my freinds jetta. His Ipod is hooked up to the aux port with a cable that connects to the bottom of the ipod so it charges it and plays it over the stereo. Unfortunately the iphone recognized the cable and starting charging but it did not transfer the sound to the stereo. This disappointed me but then we tried his fm transmitter that connects to the bottom of the Ipod it worked on the Iphone which surprised me because I assumed when the cable didn't work the sound wasn't getting transferred down to the 30 pin connector but clearly it is since the fm transmitter worked. I really hope some solution comes out soon because half the reason I bought the phone was because it was the "best Ipod yet" and I can't believe you can't easily hook it to your stereo with out having to use a crappy fm transmitter or a head phone jack cable that won't charge your phone.

That should work like a charm. I had a similar setup
on my last car for my iPod. This car has a tape deck
so I'm going the simpler way and using a tape adapter
(perhaps not as good sound, but cheaper and easier
for now).

Actually, the cassette tape adapter provides better sound than the Belkin FM transmitter, if for no other reason than the elimination of the interference.

You should be very careful doing any of these things. I plugged the charger cord into the car with the phone and it blew out my vehicle stability control on a Lexus. They had to reprogram it. Luckily, it did not void the car warranty but could have if I'd told them and they wanted to split hairs. You car manual will warn you about adding unauthorized devices to the radio as it could affect other electronics in the car, void the car warranty, and even deploy the air bags which could kill you if they burst and you're not seated properly.
I read my manual. WARNING! WARNING! Will Robinson.

Wow, can you elaborate more? All you did was plug your car charger in? Were you hooked up to hear your phone through the stereo as well?

Isn't it safe to use the headphones as an audio out and use the car charger from the Apple Store? How is this any different than adding a DVD player or satellite radio? I talked to an Apple representative over the phone and this is what they recommended.

I was not hooked up to hear the stereo through the car and was not Bluetooth enabled. I simply plugged the phone into the car adapter charger.
I asked the Lexus people, innocently of course, if the iPhone was an authorized device, as I was just showing it off to the service people, and they said it's too new yet.
All I know is the stability control (over steering, air bag deployment, traction control, anti-lock brakes, etc) was deprogrammed and they had to reprogram it.
My caution here is just meant to say that, according to the car manual, any number of things can happen when you connect devices that are not authorized by your manufacturer in terms of voiding your warranty or causing other electrical malfunctions throughout the car. The manual specifically says that cell phones can be the most problematic for causing possible electronic malfunctions and should not even be used or connected in the car unless they are an authorized device. Well let's face it, everyone uses cell phones in cars. Are they all authorized, does using a cell phone in the car void the warranty, are they only trying to sell their car adapter kits over less expensive ones out there? All possible.
