Bought iPhone--Sealed In Box--Thinking About Returning It.

I was one of the few able to walk into my local ATT store and buy an iPhone on June 29. Got the 8GB model. I didn't open the box and activate it because my Apple computer is in the shop for a memory upgrade. Really, with all or most negative things in this discussion threads and on the web that I have been reading about the iPhone--I'm thinking of taking it back for a refund. My buddy has four iPhones and things have been good for him. I've used his phone and it is an awsome phone. But, for $600, look at what people have been posting--low volume, email sync problems, batteries not lasting or getting too hot--or have to be replaced for $79 by Apple because they're soldered in? I think I made a mistake here. Somebody convince me otherwise because I have cold feet. Any comments are welcomed. zoz

Get a life! The iPhone is not perfect and my wife is not perfect but I absolutely love mine (iPhone and wife). Most things except the battery are software correctable and will be corrected. As far as the volume issue...I don't have one since I am using a Plantronics 655 Bluetooth headset and the two paired together are fabulous. My Motorolla V557 used to disconnect from the bluetooth periodically unannounced and the sound quality was poor BUT now with the iPhone there is a world of difference and... for the better.

Go ahead and return the phone there are plenty of people at our AT&T store here that are begging for an 8GB iPhone.

There are a lot of attempts to compare this forum to an emergency room, in an attempt to explain away complaints.

Bad analogy 🙂

In an ER, everyone else isn't pretending to be qualified doctors, and the doctors don't run around saying "Hey my arm's okay, so yours can't be hurting either!" or "I don't have an appendix, so you shouldn't complain if yours hurts!"

Bad analogy is right. In an emergency room you don't have a bunch of human-hating aliens trying to convince the patients that the reason their ankle is sprained or their arm is broken is because there's something wrong with the human race.

I don't think people are explaining away any problems. They're just trying to help you get some perspective. You should have been around here when the first ipod was introduced. You would have sold all your Apple stock if the boards were your only source of info!

I have imate K-Jam (same as Cingular 8125). I am running Windows Mobile 6 on it. Battery lasts for 1 week. It is 1.5 years old and battery was never replaced. When it is 10% left of battery - it still lasts for a whole day.
If I turn on WIFI on it and browse internet, play Solitaire and chat - I still get about 2 days of use easily.
My iPhone with WIFI OFF and everything else off (except 15 min email checks) last for 2 days max. If I turn on WIFI (for known networks) and use it a bit, then it lasts not more that 24 hours. With 20% of battery it lasts for half a day.
iPhone has better battery than iMate, also features are pretty similar (wifi, quad band, bluetooth)...So i can not reasonlbly explain to myself why iPhone battery is so weak...

With regards to volume...

I have noticed my iPhone volume during calls, not using speakerphone, is also lower than I would expect. After reading several threads here I decided to do a quick comparison. Upon turning to maximum volume during a call to the automated time and temperature lady (used this for reproducibility) I compared the earpiece volume of 5 phones. My 8gb iphone, my lab mates 4gb iphone, my old samsung black jack, my old nokia 8800, and my friends motorola razor. The blackjack had the loudest volume a full 10 db louder than the motorola razor. The motorola razor was about 8 db louder than the nokia 8800 and the two iphones were only 2db off from each other with the 8gb being slightly louder than the 4gb. However both iphones were lower than the nokia by 6-8 db. I did 3 trials of each and took the average. Not completely scientific, but yes the maximum volume on the iPhone is lower than other phones I have had experience with. Solution... tell people to talk louder and wait for an update. The tear down videos show a normally sized earpiece and this volume limit is obviously not hardware related.

Keep it. There are bound to be problems. Imagine if they sold over 1 Million microwaves the first month they were available. There would be rashes of housefires and people wondering why their microwave won't stay preheated.

Yes, there are some issues. But this is a new product and field upgradeable to fix 90% of the things people want and need. Not to mention, even if 100 people all post with a certain issue, that is only .01% of those who bought the phone. Hard to assume that problems are widespread based on such a small fraction.
