Bought iPhone--Sealed In Box--Thinking About Returning It.

I was one of the few able to walk into my local ATT store and buy an iPhone on June 29. Got the 8GB model. I didn't open the box and activate it because my Apple computer is in the shop for a memory upgrade. Really, with all or most negative things in this discussion threads and on the web that I have been reading about the iPhone--I'm thinking of taking it back for a refund. My buddy has four iPhones and things have been good for him. I've used his phone and it is an awsome phone. But, for $600, look at what people have been posting--low volume, email sync problems, batteries not lasting or getting too hot--or have to be replaced for $79 by Apple because they're soldered in? I think I made a mistake here. Somebody convince me otherwise because I have cold feet. Any comments are welcomed. zoz

People crack me up. They fall in love with a product cause its cool and accept all the shortcomings without question. "Wifi broken no problem" "no way of loading applications on a $600 smartphone its ok cause I have google maps" 🙂 Sure this is a first attempt for Apple but BASIC smartphone functionality is not something we should be happy to get, we should expect to hve it for the price of this device. AT&T's 8525 is 10 times more useful than the iphone and when it came out cost $100 less than the iphone but OH MY GOD it doesnt have pinch. Come on guys, be honest. Give me ANYTHING useful that this phone does that cant be phone on 90% of other smartphones. And just for the record I have an iphone. I love it for how cool it is but I cant take it seriously or use it for work or school cause of its shortcomings. Its ok to love the device but dont allow companies to put out devices with sooo many things missing, charge us more than most phones on the market and act like your happy about it. Demand the companies we give our loyalty and hard earned money to to give us products that work and do what they are expected to do. Thank you all and please accep my apology if I have offended anyone.

The phone works. There are a lot of problems - not big major problems just tons of little problems that really add up and get on your nerves...if your a power user. The short story is it's a really really expensive phone. It's all flash (pun intended) and of little use when considering the real power it could really have. Apple apparently will release updates. Everyone thinks so, fanatics will say Apple hasn't said a thing and not to count on that rumor. I think that's a true statement and I am having faith that Apple will make the phone work like a smartphone. So if you have the cash to burn, keep the phone. If you don't, there are a lot of other phones that would be a better choice for the money. I never thought I would say this, but Windows Mobile phones offer a lot more utility with less hassle and a much lower price. Yeah, they don't look as cool, but they sure make you feel smarter.

don't forget, they took people off of leopard to work on software for it and launched it on the LAST weekend of June. i don't know about you, but that says to me that they worked on the largest features of the phone, and put minor features aside (MMS, Voice Dialing) for a software update. also, in an interview with development engineers i read online said "we know about the missing features, but we have to figure out a way to make them simple and easy to use before we implement them". i think you'll be blown away by what's to come in iPhone software updates.

Personally I would take it back and wait until they fix all the problems that every one is having, And yes do pay attention to this forum because it is real problems that thousands of people are having with this phone.
For now. If you want a great gadget with lots of bells and whistles than keep it. But if you want a real phone that works properly than I would take it back and just wait until they fix all the issues.
Thats what I am doing.

I'll be more than happy to offer my "2-cents"! If you read comments posted in this area - the GREAT MAJORITY are from users with problems and/or complaints. THIS IS HUMAN NATURE!

Certainly, Apple monitors and carefully reviews this area for common "complaints" - but ... to be fair, you must consider the fact that these "discussions" are usually caused by issues that are troubling to users. VERY FEW ACTUAL OWNERS OF IPHONE WILL TAKE THE TIME TO VISIT THIS SECTION IF THEY ARE HAPPY WITH THEIR IPHONE! Just as very few users/members/customers - will ever offer comments on ANY PRODUCT OR SERVICE - unless they have a beef or complaint - or are trying to get something for nothing.

In summary - if you base your decisions on what you read in this forum [exclusively] - you're making a terrible mistake. I would consider that less than 1/100 of a percent of actual users even are posting feedback here - and of that percentage, 90 percent are griping about something, instead of taking the time to praise Apple for a wonderful new product.

I suggest you govern your decisions accordingly.

If you will put all of the options of the phone to use and don't need any extras right now...this phone is KICK ARSE!!! Sure there are some glitches but I think most of them are software/firmware related and can be worked out. For a 1st Gen product it really does what the commercials said it would.

I had my mind set to get one...then read some of the Apple bashers (I am a PC user myself) comments and thought twice...but I just came to the conclusion that....I don't care...if it is a piece of crap, we will get our money back... No company as big as Apple could put a broken product on the market and live to get away with it for long...and it just looked so cool...it does everything I want it to.

On the other hand, I would love to buy my girlfriend one, but she is Chinese and writes and reads a lot of Chinese newspapers, books, blogs, etc. on her current phone which she purchased from Hong Kong and transferred over to the States...although she would think it a really cool phone, she would miss a lot of the cool games and other features on her phone because, well, on her phone, she can type in Chinese...

Deciding on whether or not to crack open that box depends on two things...will you use it for more than just a phone? and do you need less than a traditional PDA Phone (treo, Q, blackberry)? If you fall anywhere between, take a deep breath and join us...you won't regret it.
