MacBook Pro USB port problem...

I recently bought a 100 gig Maxtor Mini external hard drive and it's only being recognized in one of my USB ports (the one on the right next to the Firewire port). I'd really like to be able to have it hooked up to the other port so I don't have to keep switching out cables. Anybody have a similar problem or any ideas???
Thanks -

I just had this happen to me. I have the 13inch MBP June 2009 model and I called the phone support and since it was a hardware issue the tried fixing it over the phone even though my thirty days was up. (I did not purchase a warranty) Needless to say I tried resetting the RAM and all that, but I had to take it in to the Apple Store and have to have the Logic Board replaced. I took it in on 10/10/09 and should have it back tomorrow 10/20/09. 10 days is a little ridiculous and since this is less than 6 months old I am a little mad. This was my first Mac and probably my last.

I guess I'll join the fray on this topic:

My MacBook pro from July 2007 is acting up, throwing the "drawing too much power" message even when there are no peripherals attached. It generates the message about once every 20 seconds on average, whenever the computer is on. It is INCREDIBLY annoying. After a permissions check (all green), an SMC reset, and a PRAM reset, nothing changed. If anybody would be able to offer any insight, I'd be indebted.

As a sidenote, this only started occurring after upgrading to OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.

There are two "connectable" USB ports connected to the high speed buses on most MBPs. One, almost invariably, also powers the built in iSight Camera. In later models you may find that the other also powers the SD slot. You have to factor the demand from such devices into your calculations when considering what they can carry. In your case, woof, it sounds as if your iSight may be defective and drawing more juice than it should.

It is a real pity that more people don't acknowledge the value of FW as a far more competent alternative. If you ever have a choice of using a device over FW rather than USB always choose the former. More power without probs, more speed, less impact on your CPU to keep it running. You name it. USB, sadly, is pretty ordinary technology.

Cheers

I definitely acknowledge that FW is a superior technology, which is why both my FW 400 and 800 ports are occupied, as well as my ExpressCard/34 slot, running an eSATA out. Unfortunately, as you said, with the built-in technologies, such as iSight, there is no way of turning off or disconnecting them. Does this mean I'm stuck with the recurring error message? Also, why did the iSight only start drawing more current just recently?
